Spearmint Tea for Excess Body and Facial Hair (Hirsutism)?

By October 28, 2011

Follow me on:

spearmint tea for hirutism, spearmint tea for body hair, spearmint tea for pcos

I've read a couple times now about how spearmint tea may help women reduce excess facial and body hair by lowering levels of androgens. Men and women both produce androgens, but men produce more of these hormones. A hormonal imbalance can encourage hirsutism (excess body and facial hair), often linked with having PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). According to this study, drinking two cups of spearmint tea a day for five days could reduce the level of androgens in women with hirsutism. Read the full details to see the amount and brew time.

I'm a huge tea fan and blend a lot of my own creations. Spearmint (compare prices) is one I use quite a bit because I love any kind of mint and it also adds a hint of sweetness so there's less (or any) desire to use sugar or honey. But brewed alone it also tastes great and is very refreshing.

I have many women email me with hirsutim asking for help with hair removal, and can understand how frustrating a battle that would be. So if something as simple, natural and affordable as drinking spearmint tea would help, even a little, that would be wonderful.

Have you tried spearmint tea to help with excess facial or body hair? Please tell us how much you drank, the amount of days and how it worked in the comments below.

I have not tried it, but wish to follow this post. This indeed would be an answered prayer. And I just happen to have a stash of Peppermint tea, as I drink it for nausea. Thank you, Naomi, for your ever informative research. :-)

Hello Josie,

I do hope it works. But spearmint and peppermint are two different herbs. Be sure to use spearmint.

Josi, this is something I did not know about
spearmint tea. I can’t wait to pass this bit
of info on to my clients. I serve tea during
the cooler months while they are getting
pedicures, and spearmint is one I have on
hand. Love Love Love your articles.

I have heard about this remedy but I haven’t tried it 2x a day for 5 days. I never knew what dosage would be best. Usually “mint” tea it is a mix of peppermint and spearment. I’m assuming for this remedy to have the best affect you would need to drink pure spearment tea. The only tea I have found is by Bigelow and it is called Plantation Mint. It is just black tea and spearmint. I’d be interested if anyone else know’s any other brands of spearmint tea that aren’t mixed with peppermint.

Thanks so much for sharing this Naomi. I am started this yesterday and i will report back in about a month.
I had my hormones tested last week so im the perfect candidate for giving it a go, i also have high androgens and excessive hair.

I couldnt find spearmint on its own so im drinking a mix of spearmint and vanilla, i hope thats not a problem.

(7) Hair Removal Guide- Naomi says:

Please do report back, we would love to hear if and how the spearmint tea works for you.

The vanilla should be fine, because teas are usually just vanilla flavored with extract. Using actual vanilla powder or beans is very expensive. But even if a powder or chopped beans were in the tea, it would only be a small amount.

I’m going to try this, but I can only find Peppermint tea, a Camomile and Spearmint blend, or a three-mint blend of peppermint, spearmint and fieldmint. Which would be best?

(9) ninx says:

I have been drinking spearmint tea (found pure spearmint tea bags to buy online) for a couple of months and it is definitely making some difference. This is really exciting because I have polycystic ovaries and have had years of struggling with facial hair. I have read that you only need to drink the tea in the follicular phase of a menstrual cycle (which I think starts from your period up to ovulation) – but also that you only need to drink it for five days a month and nowhere seems to say which five days in the cycle? Anyone know?

January 4, 2012 at 2:48 pm
(10) Hair Removal Guide -- Naomi says:

Peppermint is only peppermint, the chamomile- spearmint as well as the three-mint blend probably only has a small amount of spearmint. I would highly suggest using only spearmint because you want to get the full serving amount, which you can get online if you can’t find it at a store near you. Check the Compare Prices link above.

That’s exciting it seems to be working for you! I haven’t read anything in the study about drinking it specific days of the cycle. It may be really hard to drink the tea only in a certain phase of the cycle because many women with high androgens tend to have an erratic cycle. I don’t think it would have a bad or negative effect if it was drunk daily.

Hi Naomi

Just wanted to give you an update on my hair reduction after drinking spearmint tea.

I have been drinking it now for about 2.5 months and i have certainly noticed it slow down my facial hair growth. I still get laser, but the hair doesnt grow back as much as it used to.

So now im wondering, does this slow down the hair growth of all your body (so your head hair as well) or just hormonal hair like facial hair? I have not yet tested my Androgen levels, i will report back once i test it.

But i did read in another blog that i should increase my intake so now i drink about 4 tea bags per day.

One thing i do need to mention is that your emotional state also plays a large part in this. I know the first month i had good progress with it. the second month i was going through a bad break up, and the progress wasn’t so great. Now going into the third month, im very happy emotionally and i can see the hair is reduced considerably as well.

So ladies, get happy to see progress!

(12) mini says:

@Miss Fay
Spearmint tea should not affect the hair on your head, as it is not androgen-sensitive (unlike facial hair, which is).
You can read more about the difference here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androgenic_hair

It’s encouraging to read about your results.
I am starting this week myself.

How do you know that it is actually the spearment tea? Could it not also be that the laser treatmenst are working as they should?

(15) Josie says:

I purchased pure Spearmint tea at an Amish store. I tried it as directed, but didn’t notice any positive results.

I normally use Nair (or likewise) on my face, as I have blonde hair and laser does not work.

So, would I see the results (of less hair) after I Nair? I’m confused how I’ll see less hair when I already have a hairy face. I appreciate the feedback, and network of support.

(16) Candy says:

The problem with any mint tea is that they are also a decongestant. I was drinking one or two cups every day. Then every once in a while while I was out with friends, my nose would get sooo stuffed up that I couldn’t breath, in fact, could hardly talk. When I finally figured it out, it turned out that on the days I didn’t bother or remember to have the tea, my mucus membranes would have a “re-bound” affect, and really swell up!

p.s. to Naomi, Please have a comparison review of the four main home electrolysis machines (NoNo, Verseo, etc.). I want to try one, but have read more negative than positive online reviews. Thanks!

(18) Nakia says:

I’ve been drinking both Bigelow Mint Medley (peppermint and spearmint) and Plantation Mint (black tea and spearmint) twice a day for about 3-4 weeks. I have not been able to find pure spearmint tea in stores.

I have seen a huge reduction in facial acne and “moustache” growth. Unfortunately, I have not seen much of a reduction in my chin hair, but I believe this may be due to less hormonal sensitivity in that hair. I have heard that existing hair is hard to get rid of, but once gone, it tends not to regrow or does so at a much slower pace (and comes back thinner). So I may try laser again.

My face still tends to be oily, but not as bad. I am completely impressed, because whenever I have taken myself off of birth control, my painful, cystic acne returns immediately. This has kept it at bay and gotten rid of my moustache! Oh happy day! : )

Hopefully this helps!

(19) Dee says:

I come from a family of very hairy women…so I get it honest! Dr. Oz mentioned something about spearmint tea helping to reduce facial hair. I started to drink it but, I’m really not a tea drinker so it was difficult for me to fit in two cups a day. Soooo, I did an internet search for pills and came across a good brand of spearmint leaf pills made by swason vitamins.

Well, I’ve been taking them for a week and I notice a definite change in the amount of facial hair that is growing back in. For example, normally I have to remove the hair on my face twice a day. Now, I only have to remove it once a day.

I’m African American so I have a lot of dark spots from hair removal methods that I’m looking forward to seeing fade away since I don’t have to pick/pluck/pull as much as before. So try the pill if you can’t drink that much tea a day. I take one pill in the morning with food, and one pill in the evening with food.

(20) Tanya Krause says:

About six weeks ago I started drinking the mint tea, and about three weeks ago switched to eating fresh spearmint leaves. I pluck a couple off the plant a few times each day and chew them thoroghly before swallowing. My theory is that I’m releasing as much of the spearmint oil as possible by chewing them so well. It may not be necessary.

The spearmint plants are from a local garden shop. They are the variety used to make mint juleps, but I know there are many kinds out there. Perhaps there is a stronger variety.

I do believe it’s made a difference. Like someone had mentioned, it may not be as effective on chin hair as on hair on other areas of the face. I’m still hoping that eventually I’ll see more results in the chin area.

Drinking so much tea (I was drinking 4 strong brews per day) was really getting a bit tiring. I’m so grateful to have found an alternative. :)

(21) Mandy says:

I have had to order spearmint tea from the USA as I couldn’t get in here in Ireland, I used 160 bags and seen no difference. :-( ..Now I have started to grow me own spearmint plants, I pick the leaves and eat them raw!

As Sandra says:……”"”.if I just eat spearmint leaves, would it be EVEN better?”"………….Thats what I’m thinking Sandra!

(23) Anna says:

Glad to have found this blog! I’m 37, never been pregnant and about a year ago I started getting this really painful, terrible looking cystic acne on my chin. IHas anyone experienced this adult acne? Could it somehow be because I wonder if its because I havent had the surge of hormones from pregnancy through my body when younger? That is meant to be good for your body.Anyway, nothing would stop this cystic acne. So painful, huge swollen lumps. It basically lasted all month too.I got chinese herbs to help but they still didn’t budge.I googled ‘herbs for cystic acne’ and spearmint came up. I bought a box of 25 ‘organic spearmint tea bags’ and took 2 cups daily for 14 days. About 5 days into it, my acne completely died off. I was in disbelief. Nothing to date has ever worked before. I now have a clear chin (just scars which are a dream in comparison as can hide them somewhat with makeup). I did notice however I got splitting headaches after about 2 weeks of taking it. Upon waking I’d have this weird headache that would switch on and off, in the front of my forehead. I researched that, and discovered it can be a side effect but usually if you take it for too long during a cycle. I just started day 1 of follicular today so I’m testing out just taking it for 5 days this time and I’ll see if the cystic acne stays away. I will report back. Keep the comments and reports back coming in!

Hi Naomi,

I am a transgender (M2F) and will start Hormone Theraphy in next two months. This mint tea seems promising to me. Do you think it would reduce my facial and body hair too? Since I am middle-eastern with parents of hairy bodies, I own an excessively hairy body :’(
In any case I will drink to cups of it starting from tomorrow.

August 17, 2012 at 3:54 am
(27) Kiyakotari says:

Behnaz, this article may be of interest to you. In rats, the spearmint was shown to reduce testicular androgen production in males. It may have a similar effect in humans, which could be of interest for the M2F community.

However, the same study also resulted in some kidney, liver, and uterine tissue problems for the rats when the spearmint was administered at high doses for extended periods. further testing in humans is clearly warranted before medical use is truly recommended.

Best of luck with your transition, Behnaz!

Hi, I suffer from PCOS and have started seeing hair growth on my chain. it is extremely depressing and horrifying. With all this information you girls have given, i will definitely try spearmint tea..and let you know what my results are.

Also, i had lots fat around my belly and lost around 10 pounds. it did improved my periods a bit and i am struggling to lose more weight. May be losing more weight could help me more. i have weight only on my belly and thighs, otherwise my total weight is only 111 pounds. Hopefully i will be able to reduce 10 more lbs and drink spearmint tea and see some benefit.

Hi, I ve been having hormonal acne for years now & have been researching high & low for a solution. Diane 35 helped me a lot but since the beginning of this year despite taking diane I had a few horrible breakouts & was so depressed. well I too read that spearmint tea is good & decided to try it out & it definitely did help me. Unfortunately I was only able to try it for a bout a month because the dried spearmint leaves got infested by some bugs & worms & I had to throw a huge stash. Anyways further researching I found out that spearmint supplement – 400 mg spearmint in each capsule is available & decided to buy it. Just need to know if the pills are also effective like tea to lower androgens or will it be a waste. Both the tea leaves & supplement is NOT available in my country so it is a huge hassle for me to purchase either but its worth the trouble. So please let me know if the supplement is effective like tea & of so is 400 mg per day enough to lower androgens? BTW I purchased the supplement from Swanson Vitamins at http://www.swansonvitamins.com/SW1261/ItemDetail I also read that vitex agnus castus also known as chasteberry tree supplement is also very helpful for lowering androgens. How true is that? Thanks alot for this blog.

Been reading about some of the posters having trouble with acne. I came on the forum to read about mint, and the possibility of it helping with chin hair, but maybe I can be of help to those asking about acne.

I am celiac, and did not find out until I was about 55, about ten years ago. My daughter found out she was, and then my son’s family, and 4 grandchildren have some form of it.

As to the acne, I used to break out on my chin, and they would hurt. I had chalked it up to my “cheese” allergy, found years ago, but it wasn’t. After I stopped eating all gluten containing foods, my acne stopped also!!!! The reason I could not make a connection previously is that the acne did not show up until three days after I ate gluten! I also do not have the stomach problems I had experienced before, and I am not anemic after a lifetime of low iron in my blood!

Celiac disease can take many forms, and my son also had acne appear when he was in his late 30s. His face is now healing well, and slowly after so many years of a wrong diagnosis (his doctor called them cysts!). My grandchildren all have different symptoms, with one grandson, who we called devil grandson, because of his behavior, changed completely, and was able to focus better, and had a much calmer personality when taken off gluten.

I hope this is helpful for someone out there on the forum.

Wish I had learned about this decades ago! I’m a black woman, I mention that because the kinky hair and tendency for my skin to discolor from hair removal attempts makes my hirsutism particularly embarrassing. It’s the worst part of having PCOS by far! I have tried everything, shaving, plucking, waxing, electrolysis, laser. They either did nothing, or made matters worse. But with spearmint tea, in less that a week I started to notice a difference, less hair!

I too have hirsutism, but I do not have PCOS. I bought my spearmint tea this past sunday 01/27/2013 at my local herbal store, which they are really helpful in teaching you about any herb you ask about. I really love the smell and its pleasing to drink without any sweeteners (i.e. honey, agave or stevia) I brew in my coffee maker which makes my kitchen smell really nice in the morning. I measured 2 tablespoons for myself and put them in my filter. Its all loose spearmint tea leaves, so I don’t over brew, its nice when I drink it warm or cold. I’ve used Vaniquia and I’m tired of paying almost 200 for a small tube and tired of shaving, plucking/picking as well. Not to mention all the hyper pigmentation I have from all of that. Most of the hairs are terminal, the ones that cause me the most concern are the ones on my neck and side-burns.

I read that you are to drink it twice a day for 5 days during you cycle time. guess what its time :) so I will update with results in a month on the terminal hairs. I know there was a comment about blocking DHT. I do not think it blocks DHT just the hyper active androgen hormones. and I know from what my herbalist said it will not effect the hair on your head.

I’ve been drinking it since sunday I have not noticed anything yet but the relaxing effect it causes me, I even got some decent sleep after drinking my second cup. I drink one cup in the morning before I leave my house for work and then another right before bed to relax me. All in all ladies. I love the tea and would recommend the way I dose it in tea form. I like teas and I’m learning how to live Paleo which is also another lifestyle change that could help my hormones to balance out.

again I’ll update in a month to tell you all what happened.

I started drinking spearmint tea after I read about the benefits. So far, it has been 3 full days that I have been consuming it twice a day. I hope to see some improvement within two months or so, but I will write on this forum if i do see any improvement. I have been struggling with excess facial hair after 3 years of laser treatment, I am a female, and I hope that this works for me and every other female or male with excess hair.

Ladies, I have tried EVERYTHING. Nothing ever worked! I have been drinking Bigelow Plantation Mint spearmint tea first thing in the morning and last thing at night since October. It very gradually is working. There are now days when I don’t shave. The hairs on my face are turning to short blond ones, like they should have been all these years! The chin seems to be the big holdout, but I’m a believer. I’m also getting the hair back on my receding hairline. The body hair is definitely better. I will stick with this, and I highly recommend you at least give it a try. This is the answer to prayer for me. I believe that with all my heart. God Bless! Signed, a 70 year old grandma.

Hi, I have been drinking spearmint tea for a week now. On the first four days, I took it for 2 cups a day, morning and before sleeping. Then I noticed that I often became sleepy during the day. So this made me reduce my intake to 1 cup per day, evening only. Then on the 5th day I noticed that my hair fall was heavy. No significant change on my skin, I still had acne. Then today, 6th day, I noticed the appearance of facial hair which I didn’t have before. I need help :( I took spearmint tea in the hopes of improving my facial skin, clear it of acne, but it doesn’t seem to work. Is it too early? I don’t know whether I should continue or not. I’m afraid that if I continue, my hair fall and facial hair get worse…

Hi, I’m 33 years old and have been struggling with facial hair for about 15 years. I started shaving but over time it has grown back more coarse. I went through the laser removal treatment, but that got too pricey to continue. I was diagnosed with POCS five years ago. After my second pregnancy two years old I was having some issues so I went to my doctor who ordered full blood work. My hormone levels were high, consistent with POCS. I was referred to an endocrinologist who also did the full blood work. He was concerned about the excess hair growth, especially on my upper arms, abdomen, and back. I did some internet research and was encouraged when I read about spearmint tea. I don’t normally drink tea because I’ve never cared for it, but today is day 5 of drinking the tea and so far I’m encouraged by the results. I’m not seeing a huge difference on my chin and neck areas so I have to keep shaving, but I am seeing a different on my abdomen. I’m going to start drinking two cups of tea a day to see if that slows the hair grown down even more, but I’m not going to give up if I don’t see results right away. I’m also hoping drinking tea will help me lose some of the weight I’ve gained because of the POCS.

Thank you for all the previous comments. They have really encouraged me reading other people’s results.

Hi everybody .. I believe that you should drink this for 6 to 12 months since the hair grows in different phases , it will lower your androgen level but hair growth will take sometime same with Birth control pills for pcos, as the hair will not be encouraged on the long run to grow back it will stop eventually from growing, if you have pcos manage your stress drink spearmint tea could be the key of getting rid from this ugly hair , even of it slowed down don’t stop drinking it especially if you have pcos because your testosterone in this condition always tends to be at high levels … Good luck , hope all will benefit the most from spearmint :)

I have the same problem with stuffy nose as the other girl mentioned… whenever I’ve been using a lot of mint, then don’t have any for a day – I can hardly breath! All mints (peppermint, spearmint, etc.) are not only vaso-dilators, but also digestive aids.
I used to suck on those round little red & white peppermint candies all during the day when I worked in a profession where my breath had to smell nice. But after awhile, whenever I went somewhere and forgot them, I got terribly congested! Yes, it was a rebound effect. I feel addicted – like I HAVE to eat some everyday now!

My sister also ate mints all the time, then when she got tired of the taste and didn’t have any for a month, she started getting all kinds of stomach acid problems, and even an ulcer. Seems the pepsin in the peppermint was soothing her stomach toooo well!

I really don’t want to drink this yes everyday because it just makes me feel a little weird after drinking it but I will continue drinking this for about a week until my pills come. I saw a girl on YouTube who takes the spearmint leave capsules by the brand “Swanson” (google it) and she said she no longer has to wax at all and her results were impressive. However, I bought my spearmint tea for $5.99 USD at a store called Whole Foods and it’s organic 100% spearmint. I drank it twice yesterday and plan to drink it morning and night all week. Just a suggestion here for those that dislike the taste of spearmint in an infusion. Put a spoon of honey in and try that, personally i love it with honey but otherwise would not, so a sweetner helps and as i do not use sugar honey works fine for me. You can also grow it very easily and quckly in your garden or back yard, i do this also and fresh spearmint is stronger too. Finally you can also buy spearmint oil, make sure that it is 100% natural and organic and do not drink it as it is highly concentrated and will burn your mouth and throat. I suggest rubbing a few drops on your big toes each day, i say big toes as in refloxology the big toe is connected to the head. As for results, well one must be patient and perserve, give it 6 to 12 months to go through all the hair follicle growth stages. So far i have seen some reduction on upper lip and chin area but i do not expect an over night cure, nature takes time to do what it does and cannot be rushed :)

In the first few days the sheer excitement of being hair free made me so happy!!! It is now day 6 and I am so happy to say that the hair on my cheeks is less and a hair on my chin just fell out – I was in shock this morning and felt amazing!!!!

I do not remove hair from my face or body but apply a mix of lemon and chick pea powder everyday to my face – allow to dry and rub off gently like a kind of scrub….never before has a hair just fallen out so easily – I am so thankful and grateful to God xx

Hello folks. I’m reporting back, after starting Bigelow Plantation Mint tea in November of 2012. I have not missed a day. From November through March I drank it first thing in the morning, and last thing at night. It was working so well that I decided to cut back to only one cup — which I now drink at bedtime. The result is slow, but continues to amaze me. I shaved my face every day, and sometimes twice a day, for 58 years. I no longer use a razor on my face. The coarse terminal hairs are slowly being replaced by soft hairs. I must continue to tweeze anything that is stiff, or that is obnoxious looking. I’m washing my face with a washrag morning and night, also, as I believe it helps the dead hairs to fall out.
My complexion has never looked better. This is very exciting. It feels as though I may finally be released from the chains of embarrassment I’ve suffered all my adult life. Please try this. Do Not Use Peppermint!! It has a different effect. Four more things: 1) I have/or had PCOS. 2) My receding hairline is filling back in. 3) The chin hairs go last. 4) Arm, belly and chest hairs may be somewhat decreased, but are still there. Good luck!

I live in the UK and am 52 years old. I read about Spearmint tea helping to reduce excess androgens which I have had an intuitive ‘feeling’ about for a very long time. I have had acne on and off since I was 14 and have had more facial hair growth as I have got older. I am very encouraged by all of the positive comments by those who has regularly used this tea. I had used it in combination with other mints in a tea to some good effect but since a recent worsening of my skin I am about to just try spearmint tea on its own from Palanquin. I will let you know how I get on. I often look at others with clear skin and ‘wish’ I could be like them too.

I have the same question as avneet. i’m 20 and so far, I’ve never shaved/waxed around the hairy parts of my body. And i’m currently trying to change my diet where I don’t drink milk and eat refined sugar, and I’m also avoiding white bread/pasta, and grains in general except for oatmeal and barley because I heard those types of food really mess up with your hormones. My question is for the hair to go away, do I need to wax it off and hope that it grows back thinner, or like avneet asked, can i expect the hair to get lighter/just disappear. I hope i don’t have to resort to shaving/waxing in case it just gets worse.

Going to give this tea a go. Have recently been formally diagnosed with PCOS, although had my ovaries first scanned before moving overseas for a while a few years ago and have only just revisited the doctor to do something about it and have it confirmed. I have been battling with excess facial hair since I was a teenager though (now almost 30). It’s just been getting worse and worse though, particularly on my chin and sides of face. I also have unwanted hair under my naval and on my upper thighs. I use tweezers on my face and shave the rest. I hate the way it looks and hate the feel of my prickly face even more. I found pure spearmint tea at my local health food store. I have had my first cup and am surprised to say I actually enjoyed it thoroughly. I love normal tea and have it white with 1 and a half sugars. I decided to make my spearmint tea the same as thought I wouldn’t be able to drink it otherwise. Going to replace my first and last cups of tea for the day with spearmint tea for the next three months and see what happens. Will come back then with a good report hopefully.

Hi Everyone!!
I have been drinking spearmint tea for 2 months and I have not seen any results. I have thick eyebrows. I also have upper lip hair and cheek hair.
Could you please answer some of my questions? Please!
1. Do you drink the tea hot or cold (Please specify)
2.How many cups do you drink in a day?
3.Does the hair fall off naturally because I never have waxed and never will.
4.How much time does it take to work?
5.Can you still apply creams or such kinds of things on your face?
6.Do you oil your hair regularly?

July 12, 2013 at 11:51 pm
(127) Za says:

@priiya. I drank the tea both hot and cold.
I drank 2 cups a day but you can drank more. According to other comment the hair does fall out while washing your face. I believe it depends on the person so it’s hard to say how long it will take to work. Your best bet is to keep drinking the tea because hair goes through three stages. You can still apply creams to your face but your best choice is an all natural cream which you can find at whole-foods or order off-line. No I do not oil my hair regularly. Just keep on dranking the tea ,eventually the hair will go away. Keep the hope alive and pray. I hope I was able to help. Much love and blessings.

Thank you for your comment Za; I too pray for everyone…please don’t stop trying. I have been drinking the tea for over 3 weeks and I can see a difference and you’re right – hairs do go through stages so there will eventually be a stage where the hair stops.

I drink Palaquin Spearmint herbal tea (caffeine free) (2 cups) – 2 tea bags in the morning and 2 tea bags before I go to bed.

Hii priya, I am following this post day by day, I suffer from the same thing, I went to the doc, she told me that I have pco, but didn’t confirm the syndrome , my hormones where a mess, but later after I have been taking antiandrogens for only 21 days I decided to stop the pill and go natural, I figured out spearmint, and after 10 days off the pills I started taking spearmint in a combination with peppermint, before I had hair on my lower back that looked like a man full back hair my arms were hairy that every ten days I should wax again, every five days remove m upper lip and so, it had been 3 months, I can say It had been 3 months didn’t remove my arms and only bleach, my back is about 60% less in hair, and I remove my upper lip every 10 days I drank the tea sometimes two cups sometimes 3, and the days when your androgens are at the peak are the days of the follicular phase, and I increase my tea intake at day 9, 10 of my cycle, and 5 days after, I can tell it works very slow for my chin where I have a scar small one and some coarse hair in it, I’m 19 and I have been drinking this for 3 months, to see good results as you know hair grow in phases and that takes from 6 even to 12 or so months, and yeah eyebrows and the hair on your head will be affected reversely because high androgens will make hair on your head to fall and on your body to grow…. And low androgens hair grow on your head and fall from face, back , abdomen!

July 13, 2013 at 2:46 pm
(131) Neena says:

I’ve tried the spearmint remedy for facial hair and it really works. I thread my chin hairs, and drink just one spearmint tea bag a day. Before I started doing this, I would have to trim my facial hairs every morning with scissors, I had to do this daily. But about 2 months ago, I started threading and drinking one tea bag of spearmint tea everyday, and to my pleasant surprise, no hair grew on my chin for straight 3 weeks!! After the 3 weeks, light hairs started appearing, and 4 weeks later, I went for another threading session (all the while, drinking one spearmint teabag per day). So my threading is just once a month, and pretty much, I dont need to trim my chin hairs at all. So spearmint does help a great deal. It definitely slows down the growth rate.

I am 20 years old. Hirsutism is hard to deal with. Some days are better then others for me emotionally. Somedays I get really depressed but most of the time I am pretty happy because I am hopeful and I pray.

I talked to my mother about it which helped a lot. She is into holistic and natural remedies. We eat everything organic and do our grocery shopping at WholeFoods.

I have been dranking the tea for over three weeks and I have seen improvement in my chin hair so keep dranking the tea!!!

First change your diet. If you eat a lot of meat and processed foods it is best to completely stop eating processed foods such as fast food and junk food. Also reduce your intake of meat and if you do eat meat it is best to get if from an organic store such as Wholefoods.Meat can increase testosterone and chicken has hormones in it. I have stopped eating meat. I mostly eat seafood or beans for protein. Also decrease your intake of dairy because dairy worsens hirsutism because according to “Research has shown that the growth phase of the hair follicle is strongly influenced by IGF-1 (that pesky hormone found to be in dairy products). The more IGF-1 you have, the more likely you are to develop hisutism. On a side note, IGF-1 has also been linked to acne”. It is best to drank soy milk, coconut milk, and or almond milk. I drank coconut milk.

I hope I was able to help. Stay blessed and optimistic. I will keep praying for everybody. Much Love❤❤❤

You should do a liver cleanse. You can do this by dranking warm/hot water with lemon in the morning or at night. This will cleanse the excess hormones from your liver. It is also good to do a colon cleanse which help get the toxins out of your body. Do a blood cleanse also which will help get the excess hormones out of your blood stream.

If you wear make-up please wear all natural make-up which you can find online or at wholefoods!! Burtsbee sells all-natural lip glosses and lip shimmers, kind of similar to lipstick. I wish I had of listened to my mom because I remember when I was a senior in highschool I started wearing lipstick which was not all natural and my mom would tell me not to wear it because companies put chemicals and other toxins in make-up which can alter your hormones. Near the middle to end of my senior year,I noticed hair start to grow on my lower abdomen. So please ladies if you wear make-up all natural or no make up at all is the best way to go!!!

(134) Za says:

Reduce your stess levels by doing yoga, excercising, dancing, singing, or whatever it is you love to do. Excercise will help if you are on the heavier size which also contributes to PCOS leading to hirsutism in some cases.

Other supplements you can take for hirsutism Dong qui, Vitex Chaste, Black Cohosh, and Saw Palmetto which you can find out your local Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods,or On-line. All these supplements help support the women’s reproductive system and help increase estrogen. When you go to Whole foods or vitamin shoppe you can ask a employee what supplements are best for the female reproductive system and they will be able to recommend what is best for you.

I hope I was able to help. Stay blessed and optimistic. I will keep praying for everybody. Much Love❤❤❤

Hello all, I’m so happy to see people are reading this blog. I love to help others, and wish someone had pointed me this direction years and years ago. At any rate, I’m still drinking my Spearmint (NOT Peppermint!) tea every evening, as my last item of the day. The correct way is to leave it for 15-20 minutes, squeeze the bag, and drink. Less time is not long enough, and more time is not good either. (read that somewhere) Still pulling hairs from my face all day, everyday, because I’m self-conscious about it. I have always shaved — and I don’t do that anymore. It’s OK to keep shaving as long as you need to, by the way. My tweezers are in my pocket 24/7. I’m using an epilator, too. This may sound excessive, but I am going out in public regularly without shaving now. Could have never done that before. Little white peach fuzz is coming in, as the hairs fall out. This is a very slow process. I’ve been drinking it everyday since November 2012. Do not give up. It does work, for seniors with PCOS, at least! My face is soft. Really soft!! :) God bless.

Hello again. I want to make it very clear that my drinking the tea EVERY DAY is very slowly working, but I don’t believe young people should follow my example. Please research the instructions. Hello Everyone!!
I hope everyone’s hair is decreasing. Please keep your hopes high.
Here are some tips on How NOT to make your facial hair increase.
1.NEVER oil your face- be it olive, almond, coconut or whatever as it promotes hair growth.
2.DRINK Spearmint tea and continue to do so. It may work for most people in the long run.
3.DO NOT drink 5 or more cups of spearmint tea a day because excess of anything is bad. Always drink 2-3 cups a day.
4.BE CAREFUL of whatever products you use on your face. Also please take care of your diet. Avoid diary items as much as possible.

And Most of all… Love yourself. I know it feels too embarassing but Believe and Pray!1 :)

Hey everyone!!
I need your help. I have been drinking this tea since May 28th and I have been getting vomiting and acidity problems like thrice a month. I had been to the doctor for this every week of june and have aldready been twice this month. Is this because of the tea? I boil water and let the tea leaves seep in for an hour ,sometimes more. I also chew the leaves and then spit them out. And I also dont eat gluten(wheat) or diary.
Is the tea causing the problem??

I did visit my doctor and she that south Asians can be quite hairy, which of course was no help to me :(

Yeah my docs explanaton South Asians are hairy too. I’m not a PCOS sufferer but I have hair like everywhere, and it really sucks. The terminal hairs all over my body have gotten weaker and easier to remove. I’m a believer. TRY IT! IT WORKS! Give it a two or three weeks.

3.Where are you having excess hair?
4.Have you seen any results? How long did it take to see them?
5.Do you wax, shave, thread or do anything like that?

I have been drinking spearmint tea since two months.
I drink 2 cups everyday. I used to keep the tea leaves in for 2-3 hours but now I keep it for 20 minutes.
I have hair on my upper lip, cheek, chin, stomach and back. I also have very thick eyebrows.
I have not seen any specific results.
I dont wax, thread or shave.
I had some digestion issues but dont know whether it is because of the tea.
I would suggest everyone to avoid putting oil on their face. Also it would be good if you apply a paste of gram flour for 30 minutes and then gently wash it off your face.

I live in Canada and just tried my fist cup of spearmint. Tried mint tea but never helped much. I found this at a friends place who was using it for facial hair and she was preaching the good word. She had been drinking this for the past 6 months. This particular company uses only spearmint in the Teabags. I found the aroma and taste much nicer then mint, just love the taste, I hope it helps me as much as it has helped my friend Ruth.
Just ordered it today from http://www.palanquin-tea.com. Will post again to let you all know the results. Bought a bulk amount as it worked out good on price as well! -speak soon ( with good news hopefully)

A month
2.How many cups do you drink? How long do you leave the tea leaves in?
Twice A Day, 10 Minutes
3.Where are you having excess hair?
Light Abdominal and Chest Hair, Heavy upper thigh and lower leg, Chin Hair, Mustache,
4.Have you seen any results? How long did it take to see them?
Saw results after 2 1/2 weeks
5.Do you wax, shave, thread or do anything like that?
After treatment, I plucked hair from face and abdominal/chest. I shaved leg hair, because it was too much to tweeze
6. Did you face any side effects?
Yay weight loss.
7. Any other comments or suggestions.
Get pure spearmint. I dont suggest the blend with peppermints. Results are faster with pure peppermint. Got mine from amazon

Flawless and glowing skin.

Loads of energy.

Teeth appear whiter.

I no longer bleach my upperlip or chin as I want to see the change my beautiful face is going through.

The hair on my face and body are yet to fall out permanently and I remain positive that it will happen very soon.

(179) Nishi says:

I am so glad I stumbled upon this post. It is so encouraging to see you guys posting daily and giving each other such wonderful advice. It has really brought my hopes up. Just wanted to give a little background about me:

I started suffering from excessive hair on my body in my late teens, it wasn’t that bad, but the worst bit was hair on my chest and tummy, I hated it. I had average sideburns and the light fluff on my face, it wasn’t bad at all, and I didn’t have chin hair, basically very very fine hair.

At 16, I went in to get laser, and I can’t name the place, but they really messed up my skin, I had bad burn marks, so I never bothered going back, but I still have the scars. For some messed up reason, it caused my facial hair to get worse, I had longer sideburns extending on my cheeks, course hair on my chin and lips. So embarrassing, but basically I lost all my self confidence and self esteem. And I am 23 now, and it’s just gotten worse, as I tweeze now and it leaves marks and my skin has become acne prone. I hate going out in the sun, I hate people staring at my face. Anyways a few months ago, I went to an endocrinologist and they found a hormonal inbalance. I got a pelvic exam done, and I am scheduled for more tests in a couple of weeks. But the endocrinologist won’t be able to discuss the results with me until November (this is what you get in Toronto…all the specialists are mad busy) Anyways, in the mean time, I am fed up of letting this mad “disease” rule me and bring me down. So going to give this tea a shot, and hope for the best.

Didn’t mean to babble on and on, sorry guys. Wishing you all the best.

I can’t believe it. I’m crying right now. I didn’t even tried it yet but it just makes me so happy to read all of your comments. I have fine hair hair on my face but i only pluck my upper lip (1-2 times a week). Also three years ago when i was 14 i shaved my belly so it went from peach fuzz to hairs. + fine hair on chest. It’s so annoying. I have a peppermint+spearmint blend and a spearmint only tea bought at the grocery store. Do peppermint have opposite effect or it just makes it less concentrate? And if the only ingredient is spearmint is it ok or because it’s from the grocery it’s not a good quality ? Anyway i was too excited i started drinking the blend today and i will come back everyday to read your updates & let you know what happens! Can’t wait. Thanks thanks thanks i was so depressed it’s life saving, literally.

(185) Nishi says:

@Wendy, I don’t think it should matter if you bought it from a grocery store, but you should always read the label properly. Is it organic, 100% pure etc, or is it mixed with anything else. You want to buy the pure product.

I had a question for the other girls, do you guys suffer from hair thinning on scalp but excessive hair everywhere else? It’s so annoying. Anyways it’s been about two weeks and I started biotin after it’s great reviews. Do you guys have any experience with it? I wouldn’t say I am noticing any results, perhaps I should take close up photos to notice anything.

Do you guys take any other supplements to help?

@ nishi

i can so relate to your problem!! when we are teens..the hair growth is about fine and almost invisible..am 23 now and i too noticed slight changes but nothing very coarse or too embarrassing. i would just like to suggest some yogasanas that are very beneficial specially if u have disturbed hormones. try these:

2. alasana
3. bhujangasana

these hardly take 15 mins. initially its difficult to get the posture right
but continued practice yields you with the right posture and amazing benefits. please you ladies..i suggest yogasana..its very very helpful but it takes time..however its always best to treat your problems from within and in best possible natural ways instead of shelling out your money on antibiotics that have permanent harmful side effects. these yogas along with spearmint tea and the face packs that i mentioned in my previous comment are bound to help you!! and i am stressing this over and over because it has helped me in a great way! i just want to spread the news and help everyone because i know what you all are going through..i can completely understand how everyone is just waiting for a MIRACLE!! well..here it is..GRAB..try ladies :)

(192) A says:

Unfortunately, I also suffer from hirsutism, with hair covering my lower abdomen, chest, upper legs, butt, lower back. I have also had facial hair, but recently it got worse. However girls, how cliche this may sound.. don’t let yourself get down by this. I refuse to. Hair is hair, it can be removed.. whether it be waxing, shaving, laser or electrolysis. There are diseases that cannot be removed by any such thing. As hirsutism is hormonal permanent hair removal methods will need touch ups and might not be as permanent in hormonal areas (chest, face, abdomen).
I hope however that a combination of hair removal and
hormone stabilizing food can help all of us. By the
way, I do not have a hormonal imbalance but am
possible sensitive to normal amounts of androgen (the hormone that makes hair).
I have been drinking the tea for 3 weeks now, and I just added pumpkin seeds to my regime. It is too soon to tell if I have had results though. But I will keep everyone posted.

Much, much love!

Just got some organic peppermint tea from whole foods. Hopefully I see a difference soon.

August 13, 2013 at 12:30 am
(197) Sharon says:

Tmac, please don’t use peppermint tea. Buy pure spearmint in tea bags or loose leaves, and follow the instructions on the package. I see a variety of advice in the column above, but I need to tell you that I have done NOTHING different, except the addition of this Spearmint to my diet. Don’t let the fact that it appears complicated stop you. Now. Time for my monthly update: I have never plucked so often in my life, but the hair on my face is blond/white now, and very different in texture than the full facial “whiskers” I sported for five decades. My mustache was never bad, but is getting better. Many of the chin hairs are still stiff, but I see fewer of them than in the past. The good news this month is that the dark hair on my arms is leaving. It may be wishful thinking, but I don’t believe I have as many hairs on my nipples/chest as before. Shaving your entire body before sex, sucks! I always wanted to be one of those women who could take a two minute refresher shower, and pop into bed feeling sexy and full of confidence. I’m old now, but I sure wish that for all of you! XXOO

sorry..typo..its halasana..the plow pose…kindly be careful and don’t try to get the posture right for the very first time or within few days..it might take a lot of practice but just try everyday and eventually you will get it. halasana is done after sarvangasana and is helpful for women during their menopause or when they are dealing with any sort of hormonal imbalance(most of my aunts found it very effective and so i insist a lot on this asana!!) . and kindly read the cautions before you start doing halasana. have attached a link below..kindly go through :) happy to help :D

August 13, 2013 at 11:38 pm
(203) Nishi says:

@ Priyanka, thanks so much for the yoga advice as well as your previous face mask thing, I used to do that before but didn’t think it worked, might make it a routine now.

Starting from next week, since I am not home this entire week, I have already planned a lot of serious changes lol. Of course, changes to diet and exercise. I am a vegetarian so mostly going to focus on beans, eggs, broccoli, spinach, carrots, veggie wraps, and occasional rice and pasta. Drinking 2 cups of spearmint tea. And girls, try to drink/eat items high in vitamin C, it will help our skin with the silly acne problems too.

Exercise: morning yoga and evening gym (at least 3 times)

Supplements: Omega-3 fish oil capsules and biotin

That along with daily face acne gel, and masks at bedtime.

I know that the exercise and diet bit is crucial, since weight issues go hand in hand with hormonal issues.

My question is, are you guys prescribed any medications to help? Anything that has caused any improvements?

August 13, 2013 at 11:42 pm
(204) Nishi says:

@ Kylie, sorry can you clarify what you mean? Are you saying drinking the tea has made your breasts bigger? I would consider that an added bonus lol.

(205) Bella says:

I discovered this page yesterday anhatte decided to post now.

Though I’m not diagnosed with PCO / hirsutism i do have more hair growth than my family. I never show it to my doctormaybe i should do this next time.

It all begans with puberty. . I’m so ashamed of my fault considering my diet because the secret was lying in front of me. All of my family drink traditionally spearmint with green tea. They prepare the tea with fresh gloves. My grandpa has his own garden, it’s a biig one and there is a spearmint plant he has done a long long time ago. The high difference between me and my family is that i never ever liked the tea i thought it’s will never satisfy my hunger and it tastes too water. Like theres only water therein. So yeah; milk was my favor…i drank so lot milk in my childhood it’s not normal anymore. Excessive dairy consumption. And since puberty i ate a lot of rubbish sweets everyday combined with dairy products. I broke out, it became worser and worser. Plus i got so hairy. It drove me insane. I was 12 when the acne and hairy symptoms began, I’m 19 now and very happy. Sorry if i write too much i Will cut here and tell you my changes.

August 14, 2013 at 1:28 am
(206) Bella says:

My big changes :
I strictly avoid dairy since 2year,avoid sweets most of the time ( because allergie to preservative ), healthy diet most of time. I’m not vegetarian!
I wash my face and body only with water since 2 year. My face and back is almost gone now.
I have much thinner facial hair growth compared to my teen years but still i have hairy issue i think i could reach better results :)
i drink spearmint tea since 3 days everyday to the breakfast and sometimes at evening. I put sugar within to make it more tasty and drinkable. Is that okay concerning the spearmint therapy ?
I wished i drank the tea my whole life like all of my family did..they are all so non – hairy , so thin and almost no hairy legs and upper lips and belly !
From now on i Will drink it. I can tell you how to prepare it tasty (i love how my mum does it ) and we have fresh gloves :)
ot a little chin hair last year i dunno why. It’s weird because i have an anti hormone diet. I wish that the spearmint will help. I will post if i have results. Keep your motivation going on guys. God bless you.

Ps : i would definitely recommend fresh or dried spear tea but please no capsules! The stuff is just high concentrated and often synthesized and not organic.

August 14, 2013 at 6:12 am

@Bella – please drink pure spearmint tea with no sugar. Drink it twice a day. Hope you get your facial hair gone. :)

Hiiii all
Pls need help, now I have a small mint plant and I suspect that it is spearmint, the only thing is that the leaves of it have stems to the plant, I’ve heard that leaves must have no stems, and the leaf should be stuck to the plant directly, is it like that, is that true, how do your spearmint plant look like?
I used to drink spearmint in combination with peppermint, I know that peppermint is also anitandrogenic , it did help me a lot, the hair of my head stopped falling out, and hair generally got less, but since I have heard not to drink peppermint I felt so confused and lost, I want now to drink pure spearmint tea, The mint I have has big circle-like leaves and it’s light green …
Thanks for any help :)

Sorry for the late reply.. Was kinda busy :P people do say that lemon honey mask bleaches your skin but frankly I haven’t really noticed the “bleaching” effect so far. It’s just working great with the spearmint tea combo.. Clearer, radiant and fairer skin :)
@ nishi
These masks take time to show their wonderful effects on your skin. Initially I too dint notice anything but with continued use of these packs, I have all my acne scars gone..!!

I have one embarrassing question though.. Have any of you experienced less libido after having drank the spearmint tea for about 20 days?? I don’t get as aroused as I used to get before!! Anybody experiencing similar thing?

August 17, 2013 at 8:12 am
(216) Doha says:

The problem is that I can’t find spearmint here in the middle east, everybody seems unfamiliar with it, for them all mint plants are known as mint :( and at stores all I could found was a blend of both peppermint and spearmint and yes I have tried it for three month and it did lower my free testestrone as I have got tested for it twice, I saw results up to 50 % reduction on my back and tummy, I have mild hirsutism, I still go to thread my face every three months, I use lemon and salt for my face and the results are WOW it does really really clear the face, but seriously why peppermint is not recommended ? I had excellent results with it, shine a light plzzzzzs :(

Thanks all of you :) I do really feel better feeling that we all helping each other on this, pls if you ever have some new updates share, if you also have any tips about the subject just say them!
@Priya yes! I like using lemon and salt to my face, just would make your skin glow, but first test on a small area of skin before you apply,I am pretty sensitive when applying lotions and masks to my skin, but this mixture is really gentle to my skin, I also use it to my body, with my legs I’d use a loofa and warm water, it makes waxing pretty easy and reduce ingrown hairs so much, I use a natural loofa! With soap
…. Love and peace all of you <3

@ Doha, I think peppermint and spearmint blend should be fine, and even you have noticed changes, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I was wondering about the lemon and salt, do you use it on your face as a mask or as face scrub?

@ Love me, so with the tea you didn’t have to tweeze or wax they fell off on their own from your chin? That’s great stuff.

Hope you guys enjoy the weekend!

@Nishi, yes I use lemon and salt as a scrub, and I leave it up to 10 minutes then wash it off…
@Priya….. I’m not sure about acne since I don’t have this problem, my biggest problem is hair and this fuzz on my face! I advise not to apply acidic things to your skin since this could irritate it, I’m sure spearmint tea by itself would help a great deal, and yes I advise you to wash only with water, and dry your face with a gentle soft towel that is used only for your face after every wash :)

August 18, 2013 at 3:38 pm
(233) Nishi says:

@ Priya I also have a combination of oily skin and patches of dry skin. I get acne popping up randomly. I use tea tree oil, it smells nasty but I can swear on it, it does wonders to the skin, and as far as I can tell, it eases some of the acne marks. I love it since it’s natural, I use that along with vitamin E for scarring or aloe vera, those are good too. Week long use of makes my skin glow and when I forget to use it for a few weeks, I notice my skin becomes more prone to acne.

@ Piyu, hang in there. I know that feeling I have hair on my cheeks too. Well, I have courser hair near my jawline, sideburns and upper lip (as in darker hair) and then faint hair on my upper cheeks and chins. I used to bleach but I don’t think that’s a solution…and the chemicals always put me off, so I have stopped doing that and just accepted it as it is.

Guys who have whiteheads, I actually recommend a toner, I use 100% tea tree oil to ease it, it’s a natural antiseptic. Or I dab some hydrogen peroxide on, leave it for 10 minutes then wash it off.

Keep hopes up everyone! Xx

Guys, apart from the hair issues, do you guys suffer from weight issues too? Are any of you guys vegetarian or do you mind sharing some of your day to day diets? Like what do you eat everyday?

Also, does the tea affect very faint hair? like I have very faint and little hair on the back of my neck and back.

All the best guys.

@Yo – pudhina is mint and it is very different from spearmint tea. You should drink pure spearmint tea.
@Neha- I put boil a cup of water. After it has boiled, I put the spearmint tea. After 20 mins I strain the tea. Dont exceed 30 mins. I let the tea cool for sometime and then I drink it.
@Nishi- I have stopped diary and gluten ( wheat) for two months. It has not shown any benefits. I am trying to gain weight. I am very slim from before but my Mom feels this tea is making me even more slim. I eat rice mostly. I am a non vegetarian.

@ Priya, I know that horrible feeling. I also get the worst tummy ache and nausea during my periods, and yes my right upper leg hurts as if the bone is being crunched. People think I am being dramatic but the pain is really unbearable at times that I just take meds and sleep through it.

People do claim dairy free diets help reduce acne, but I never noticed that for me, so I need to keep milk in my diet. I need the calcium and protein. If you want to gain weights then eat lots of carbs, so don’t cut wheat, unless it’s for a medical reason.

This is so amazing! I like many of you have facial hair I don’t want. I do not have a diagnosed hormonal problem but it sounds like it might help regardless. I will definitely come back and let you know my results. I have always had a mustache and a lot of hair in general and it seems to run in the family. I can deal with the rest of my hair but the facial hair is really annoying and embarrassing. I can not afford laser treatments and waxing is not an option for me. Thank you for everyone’s helpful comments, obviously no one is alone with this problem. I read that spearmint regulates hormones so that may mean it is a natural solution to the problem. Good luck to everyone.

August 28, 2013 at 11:25 am
(278) Sumi says:

Spearmint tea is a relatively safe herbal beverage that is sometimes used in place of peppermint. In addition to being rich in vitamins and minerals, spearmint tea may provide some medical benefits for women with an excessive hair growth condition called hirsutism. Due to its relative safety, excess spearmint tea isnít likely to cause negative effects in individuals who are not allergic.

According to the Steady Health website, one serving of dried spearmint contains noticeable quantities of dietary fiber, riboflavin, folate, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper and vitamins A and B-6. Spearmint teas are generally made from the dried leaves and flowering tops of the plant, collected before the flowers are fully developed. The recommended dosage for spearmint tea is 6 tbsp. of dried herb per 2.5 cups of boiling water.

August 28, 2013 at 11:26 am
(279) sumi says:

Androgen and Testosterone

A study cited by the ďPhytotherapy ResearchĒ journal indicates that drinking spearmint tea twice a day may reduce the levels of male sex hormones in women with a hormone imbalance called hirsutism. The most obvious symptoms of hirsutism is hair growth on the stomach, breasts and face of many women as a result of excess testosterone and androgen. Although no studies have been performed on similar effects in healthy individuals, it is possible that excess spearmint tea intake may have a similar effect on individuals without hirsutism, resulting in decreased levels of male sex hormones.

Kidney Strain

Drinking too much spearmint tea can potentially stress your kidneys, leading to a condition called hyponatremia. The kidneys are central in the regulation of water, salts and other solutes, and are easily overtaxed in situations of excess fluid consumption. When you drink too much too quickly, your kidneys cannot process the water quick enough, causing your blood to become waterlogged and potentially leading to swelling of the brain. Since a healthy kidney can excrete between 0.21 and 0.26 gallons of water an hour, you would have to drink spearmint tea in excess of 1,000 mL an hour to cause a net gain in water in your body.

Safety Concerns

Although spearmint tea is generally considered healthy, it may cause problems with some medications. Talk to your doctor before adding spearmint tea to your diet to reduce the risk of experiencing negative effects such as allergic skin rashes. If you have consumed more than 1,000 mL or 33 oz. of spearmint tea, avoid drinking any other fluids for at least an hour to allow your kidneys sufficient time to process the liquid.

(286) Faye says:

Hello everyone. Iím 31 and have been battling hirsutism since I was 16 years old. I hadnít even realized it until a classmate pointed out that I had sideburns. I was mortified and went home to shave my face that very night. From that moment, Iíve been totally reliant upon a razor everyÖsingleÖday! Itís horrible. Over the years, Iíve tried so many different hair removal methods, and I always end up running back to the razor. I have tried electrolysis, laser, various types of wax (both professional & at home), tweezing, threading, epilation, electric shaver, depilatory creams, and the good ole fashioned razor. My hair growth has only gotten worse and worse over the years. Sadly, I now have a full beard (just like a man) as well as hair on my chest, nipples, abdomen, feet, and upper/lower legs. In the past, Iíve noticed that certain foods seem to trigger faster hair growth. So since June of this year, Iíve been on a pretty restrictive diet. I eliminated most processed foods, all artificial foods, dairy, and meat (except for occasional fish), and greatly decreased my processed sugar intake (replaced by Stevia). My go-to food choices included green organic homemade smoothies every morning and anything with fresh organic raw or cooked fruit, veggies, nuts, and seeds. Only very recently have I eliminated gluten altogether.

August 31, 2013 at 12:46 am
(287) Faye says:

I have weighed myself every single morning prior to consuming any food just to see how the previous dayís food choices had affected my body, and that has helped to guide me towards what foods I should be eating. My thought process is that if a food hasnít digested by then, I should probably cut it out of my diet because itís not helping me. I have kept a daily weight log that included the foods I ate the day before. I lost 17 lbs since early June, mostly in my mid-section. Oh, and I was also very careful about food combining as was mentioned in the Beauty Detox book. From this diet alone, I noticed all of the hair growth on my legs slowed and became much finer. The hair on my chest also became finer and slowed down quite a bit. My nipple hair pretty much vanished right away. However, my abdominal and facial hair remained unaffected for the most part.

August 31, 2013 at 12:47 am
(288) Faye says:

Anyway, a few weeks ago, I slipped back into all of my old eating habits for one week due to a very stressful situation I had been facing. As a result, all of the hair returned to coarse and quick growing. Even the nipple hair started growing again. My face broke out in acne all around the sides of my mouth and chin area. The skin on my face became very blotchy, clammy, and the pores looked huge. Even the skin around one of my eyes looked distorted, which made my eye look offset. UghÖ I was so devastated. I looked like Iíd aged 10 years! I immediately got my butt back on track with my healthy eating habits, and the acne is almost gone. Then I FINALLY found a local store that sells spearmint tea, and Iíve been taking it now for two days. I have been reading everyoneís posts every single day for continued inspiration and motivation, and I greatly appreciate all of your comments. By reading them, I finally feel like Iím not alone in this journey. I know my post is very long, but I just wanted to give you all my complete history in hopes that I can also contribute in some helpful way.

I steep one tea bag in a cup of boiling hot water, cover it, and leave it to steep for about 10 minutes, according to the packageís instructions. @Nishi — I just read one of your recent comments about needing dairy and meat for the calcium and protein. Unless you are consuming these products in their raw and pure form, their natural nutritional benefits have been cooked out by the high temperatures. Take for instance the U.S. — Americans drink cow’s milk like it’s cool, yet osteoporosis is very high here. I also read somewhere that drinking pasteurized milk can actually leach calcium from your bones. If I were you, I’d just do some research. All of your conventional sources will always tell you milk is needed, so look for alternative sources. Also, you can get plenty of protein from raw nuts and seeds too. If you want, I’d be happy to go back and find my sources and post them here.

Hi Pragya,

Your story is interesting because it’s quite similar to mine, when I got laser it did worsen the hair. But I am still optimistic, I want to give another dermatologist a try in the future. But for now, I am relying on getting my diet back on track, consuming this tea and going to see the endocrinologist for tests and advice. I will send you pics and we can track each others progress? What do you think? Good luck!

@Faye, thank you for your advice, that’s very thoughtful of you. Well for me, I had a consultation with a nutritionist and GP, and they basically gave me a lot of advice, and have recommended steps from Canada’s Food Guide. I am not too familiar with the cases in USA though. At present, I have to take supplements, and of course maintain a balanced diet with a lot of alternatives and focus on legumes, dairy, and nuts to achieve my protein and calcium. I only drink like 2 cups of milk or less (since the taste irks me) and that has never caused any problems, and helps me feeling full. Of course, there is always a lot of conflicting findings and research around, so it’s a good idea never to do anything extreme. But thanks to supplements; vitamins, fish oil and balanced eating, I hope to achieve a healthy lifestyle! Please tell me more, about your progress though, are there more bald patches today? All the best to you!

@Faye Im so so happy that things are working for you but then do you wax or thread?? And which day of the cycle are you on? If you consume it during your follicular phase, it shows faster effect. I have been drinking tea from 3 months and I drink 2 cups per day. I have never waxed my facial hair so Im yet to notice any difference.

I AM Reducing my spearmint intake. Im going to be consuming it only during day 1-14 of my CYCLE. Could you guys please ADVISE me on this??

@Jasmeen You can take spearmint tea. It will really help you. Drink two cups a day. You could buy either the bags or the leaves, does’nt matter. The tea makes you lose weight and hair on your face. And yes, dont consume any liquid for about 1 hour after drinking it.

@Pragya Even I have loads of facial hair. Spearmint tea is sure to help you. It will also make you lose weight.

@Za Thank You so much. How is your progress going on??

September 1, 2013 at 1:23 pm
(305) Faye says:

Yeah unfortunately there is a ton of conflicting research on just about every topic imaginable, which makes it so hard to know what is really right sometimes. Personally, dairy makes me break out all around my mouth, and I feel like it also exacerbates my hirsutism. So I just get my calcium from leafy greens in a green smoothie I make each morning. Iím sure dairy doesnít affect everyone the same though.
As for my face, the hairs feel much finer in the morning, but within a few hours, the hairs begin growing in just as strong and coarse. The growth is definitely slowing down though. Also, a few hairs eventually did begin to grow inside the bald areas, just not as much. It seems that maybe the hairs are still active in those areas, but they are just growing in VERY slowly making it appear hairless. Another change Iíve noticed is my leg hair. I used to have to shave my legs every single day, but the growth has slowed down quite a bit there as well. So far I havenít had to shave my legs in two days. Overall, the spearmint tea in combination with healthy eating does seem to be making a difference.

September 1, 2013 at 1:55 pm
(306) Faye says:

@Priya, I just shave every day. I try to let it grow in as long as I can each day to see the growth changes, but then I canít stand it any longer and have to shave it by early afternoon. I have no idea what day of my cycle Iím on. My cycles have always been very irregular, so I never keep track. Iím just drinking 2 cups of the tea every single day. Do you consume any refined sugar and lots of carbohydrates? I have learned that for many of us hirsute women, insulin resistance can be a factor. So itís best to avoid high glycemic foods altogether. I donít know if that may be hindering your progress or not. Could it be the variety of spearmint tea you are drinking? If itís not organic, maybe some of your health issues could be linked to pesticides or something of that nature? Iím not familiar with conventional growing methods of spearmint, so I have no idea what they would use, if anything. Also, if itís not organic spearmint, maybe itís lacking the necessary nutrients that help us to heal? I donít knowÖ Iím just trying to brainstorm a couple ideas for you. I would really love to hear that you are finally seeing some results and also feeling much better very soon! Iím praying for you daily.

Hi guys,
I know that fibers aid liver function and that makes the body produce more sex hormone binding globulin which reduces free testosterone, so I’m including this in my diet. I eat sun flowers seeds, almonds and organic apples to get the fibers my body needs.
I have another tip … For those how have insulin problems that is related to PSOS… Eating most of your calories in your breakfast less in dinner … And the least at lunch …. I’m doing this and I have noticed that I have a better mood I used to be nervous and stuff… But this plan really works for women with pcos and hormonal problems…
And don’t forget that stress plays a role, even when the body is trying to balance a specific hormone or protein stress can effectively disturb the whole process ……..

(313) Faye says:

@moon: That’s awesome!! What kind of results are you getting and where? I am currently drinking spearmint in tea bags, but it’s not organic. The organic tea bags should be here in a couple days, but I’m thinking maybe I should try the loose dried leaves too…or even fresh leaves! :-) This is all so exciting!!

@Priya: You’re welcome! Let us know how your progress goes!

Does anyone know if the chick pea paste mixture actually works to remove coarse hair too? Or does it just work for peach fuzz type hairs? Thanks!

Also, is anyone trying the DIM complex? I keep hearing about it. I’m probably going to do a little google research on it later tonight.

I’m on day 5 of taking the spearmint tea, and my face and leg hairs still seem finer, and the hairless patches on my face still remain. Yesterday I went the entire day without shaving my face just to see what the hairs were looking like, and this is what I found: my neck hairs are still very coarse. The hairless patches on my face remained hairless all day :-) , while the rest of my facial hairs looked much finer. The side burn areas closest to my ears are still coarser just like my neck hairs though. My chin hairs and upper lip hairs are even finer already. This is very encouraging! I did slip up today with my diet though, and I ate some sweet foods. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Still praying for us all! God bless!!

(320) Faye says:

@moon: I feel your pain on the embarrassment of the facial hair. Iíve been married for over a year and still have yet to even talk about it to my own husband! I usually will always wear my hair down so it somewhat covers the sides of my face. My neck area has been the worst of it all. If I wasnít so embarrassed about the noise of using an electric shaver within an earshot of my husband, Iíd still be using that, because that was the only method that didnít irritate my skin and allowed my makeup to go on smoothly. Razors always leave those irritating bumps on my skin, which makes it SOOO obvious that I shave, and thereís just no hiding that. Plus it always affects the way my makeup goes on too. UghÖ

September 4, 2013 at 11:51 pm
(321) Faye says:

Have you tried a manís electric shaver before? I used a Braun Series 1 shaver for a couple years, and my makeup went on flawless. I was even able to wear my hair up with pure confidence. I wish they made a shaver that was silent, because then I could still feel confident in using it. Hopefully we wonít need one pretty soon! Anyway, I just recently switched up a couple things in my shaving routine that seems to be helping a lot. I am now using a manís disposable Mach 3 razor and Kiss My Face Moisture Shave lotion in key lime scent. The lotion is PERFECT!!! Also, I only shave in the hot shower a few minutes after the hairs have softened, but only after I have also washed my face with Dr. Bronnerís Magic Soap. Then I run the razor blade under hot water for a few seconds to warm up the blade first. I have extremely sensitive skin, so thereís not much else that seems to have helped.

September 4, 2013 at 11:52 pm
(322) Faye says:

@moon: (message continued)
Also, I have had to use makeup to conceal any noticeable areas every single day, which just adds so much more to my daily routine. I think I have used just about every type of makeup imaginable. Right now the only thing that helps is a plain old concealer stick without any foundation at all, but Iím trying to find a nice organic one thatís good for my skin. Anyone have any ideas on a makeup brand? Bare minerals only works well with the electric shaver, so now I have to stay away from mineral powders. I know that too much sun exposure isnít so good for your skin, but I just started to lay out in the sun every other day to help conceal the redness, and itís been helping some so far. Iím hoping that in the next month I wonít need to conceal anything anymore. Fingers crossedÖ

September 5, 2013 at 12:07 am
(323) Faye says:

@Priya: How strange? Spearmint tea should not be causing hair loss. Whatís your diet like? I really feel like there is something else going on with you that has nothing to do with the tea. I find that foods that contain lots of refined sugar and starches (breads, pastaÖ) and processed foods are the absolute worst for my hair growth issues. Spearmint tea should be helping the hair on your head. So there must be some other factor that needs to be addressed either in your diet, your environment, or possibly a medication you might be taking. I try to live by this quote:
ďLet the food be thy medicine, and the medicine be thy food.Ē ~ Hippocrates

@Pragya: I used to thread too, and it caused lots of irritation, and I had to revert to shaving again. Please do not get discouraged about drinking spearmint tea. You should not be losing hair from your head. Actually, it should be the opposite. Iíve been reading a ton about this, and I keep hearing about people getting head hair back! This is very encouraging!

September 5, 2013 at 6:35 am
(324) Priya says:

@Pragya Please drink spearmint tea. It really works for removing facial hair. I think the hair loss is due to the water which i use to wash my hair.

@Faye Even i feel embarassed. People make fun of me a lot. I remain silent all the time. Sometimes they whisper about me. They keep commenting about me being a boy. But then Im praying. Hoping things work out for the best.

Im praying for you all. I pray everyday. <3 <3

September 5, 2013 at 11:08 am
(325) Faye says:

@Priya: That is so unacceptable for anyone to treat you that way. I can only imagine how that must feel. Iíve always been extra cautious to make sure I conceal everything before I leave the house every single day for the past 16 years, so Iíve been able to avoid most of the negative comments. I just wish I could finally face the world bare faced for once! Everyday I have been finding time to just close my eyes and imagine my skin is baby smooth and hair-free and how it will feel to be confident in my skin again. By the way, have you thought about buying a water filtering shower head?

(326) Faye says:

Good news!! Today is day 8 of drinking spearmint tea, and I do not have to shave my face today! The hair is growing in much slower, and I only need to shave every other day instead of every day. :-) This works!!! Keep drinking the tea!!!!!!!

Im happy things are working out for u!And I still have’nt figured out the exact cause for hairfall. Well, seems like I cant even imagine how my face would look without all these unwanted hair.
Anyways Im praying for u!!

@ Priya

It broke my heart when you said people make comments and ask if you are boy. Do not worry about what people say, you are a beautiful women. Things will get better, believe me. Do not shave or remove the hair as this will make the hair grow longer and thicker. For the chin you hair you could use gel to make it lay down and less noticable. What has been making me feel more feminine is wearing my favorite outfits. I love to wear dresses and skirts. Keep drinking the tea. Have you tried changing your diet?

Keep your head up beautiful. I am praying for you and everyone on here.

(330) Ctb says:

I know this is primarily about facial hair but there are many mentions of adult cystic acne. Lemon juice, not from a bottle from a lemon. Rub it on your face after you wash it. Also, 85 to 90% of people have parasites and worms. You might want to look into a parasitic and worm cleanse. I know it’s Nasty but better out than in. I hope this helped some people.

Even the acne on my face has not stopped. Im getting severe hairfall. Probably because of the water, I dont know :( I have reduced my intake of spearmint tea. I hope you are doing fine. Im praying for you.

(335) Faye says:

@Pragya: Yes I do shave, but the hairs only appear thicker because the razor leaves a blunt edge where it cut the hair. Iíve tried just about every hair removal technique available, and shaving has been the only thing that has worked successfully for me since I have extremely sensitive skin. Believe me, if I could find an alternative, Iíd use it in a heartbeat! With that said, for the past three days I have been tweezing every unwanted facial/neck hair as an experiment to see how long it takes to grow back in. I donít normally like to tweeze, thread, or epilate because I get horribly irritated skin and massive ingrown hairs. Plus, my skin never feels baby smooth when I tweeze, but Iím dealing with it this one time just to see if the hairs grow in lighter and finer. In the past, the hairs usually returned within a week, but I have a feeling it will be different this time. We shall see.

September 9, 2013 at 11:28 am
(336) Faye says:

@ Priya: Have you considered visiting a holistic doctor to get to the root of your problem? Also, I agree with Za. It is sooooo important that you consume lots of fresh ORGANIC uncooked fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens. What exactly are you still eating each day? If youíre still consuming high glycemic foods, you could be worsening the hirsutism, which would explain why you are also losing hair on your head. Maybe start keeping a food diary and start keeping notes of the dates you notice when things get better or worse.

@ Nishi: Yes, Iíve also had a few issues with my comments not posting right away. Sometimes it takes a while for the comments to show up, but they usually appear eventually.

September 9, 2013 at 2:10 pm
(337) Nishi says:

@ Priya, I did reply before but it never got posted, but I just wanted to say, hang in there, I know that feeling of being teased, but hopefully we can grow stronger out of this. Did you consult a doctor about your hair loss? I suffer from hair loss too, not related to the tea, I think it’s because of hard water here. So I am going to look into those shower head filters.

@ Faye, for me I could never shave, because I just have this paranoid idea that the hair would still be visible, since it’s not removed from it’s root. I use Nair’s facial wax, it works good, but I hate having bumps sometimes. So I use tea tree oil after it, and facial scrubs. I wax and use ice to ease the sensitive area, and it works great. I tweeze the stray hairs but I think it would take forever to tweeze all of it. So perhaps that could work for your sensitive skin too?

September 9, 2013 at 2:17 pm
(338) Nishi says:

@ Girls, especially those living in India, have you heard of this product called Epilite hair growth retarder?
A friend of mine highly recommended it after it stopped the hair regrowing on her chin and neck. I can’t buy it here, but I might get it shipped from India. It sounds too good to be true, but I was just wondering if anyone of you have heard about it?

(339) Priya says:

@Za I have always eaten veggies and fruits. I eat eggs 4 times a week. I very rarely eat junk food. I dont know whats causing my hair fall. I never used to have hair fall before but since two months, a lot of hairs keep falling. Please help me.
@Faye I have stopped diary. I eat eggs, bread, leafy vegetables, fruits, fish and nuts. I really dont know what to do. Could you please help me? I oil my hair regularly. I have hairfall since 2 months. Its increasing more as days pass by.
@ Nishi I dont know what to do. Im going to consult a doctor today. But then Im afraid of consuming any tablets or something. I fear they may make my hair worse.
Please Pray!!

(340) Lilly says:

Hi all,
I just bought organic spearmint tea yesterday. And I added 1 spoon of sugar, I wish I hadn’t though, it became too sweet. I don’t like how it tastes, what do you guys add to it or do you have it plain? I suffer from excessive hair everyyyywherrree, so hoping this helps.

How many cups do you drink? Should I have as many as I can, since the box says that’s fine?

September 11, 2013 at 8:44 pm
(341) Faye says:

@Lilly: I wouldn’t drink too many cups in a day, since too much of anything is never a good idea. It seems that most of us are drinking about 2 cups per day, maybe even 3. I personally only like to use just a little bit of organic Stevia in mine. I’m trying to avoid refined sugar since it contributes to the root cause of my excessive hair growth. I tried raw honey in it the other day, and I did not like it at all. Good luck to you!

September 11, 2013 at 9:00 pm
(342) Faye says:

@ Nishi: Yes, unfortunately shaving does sort of leave the hairs slightly visible, not to mention the razor bumps. Thatís why I feel the need to use makeup all the time, and I hate it! So far the hairs have not grown back since I tweezed them all individually about 5 days ago. It was a royal pain in the you know what, but it feels so much better now that I donít have any stubble. Are your facial hairs very coarse and thick? Unfortunately I have so much facial hair that I just cannot stand to let it grow in long enough for waxing to be affective. Itís too embarrassing. Iím going to try and stick to tweezing if it doesnít give me ingrown hairs this time. It takes forever to tweeze all the hairs, but I really love not having to shave!

On another note, I’ve been taking Ctb’s advice in regards to using lemon juice on my face, and it works really well for clearing up the skin and reducing the appearance of pores. My skin feels younger. Before bed, I wash my face and apply the lemon juice with a cotton ball and just leave it to dry. Once it’s dry, I just go to sleep. Think I just found a new regimen! :-)

September 11, 2013 at 9:05 pm
(343) Faye says:

@Priya: When your hair falls out, are you noticing the root of the hairs too? Or is your hair becoming more brittle and just breaking off? Also, what type of breads do you eat? What did your doctor say? If you’re fearful of anything he prescribes you, maybe try talking to a holistic doctor to help get to the root of the problem.

(344) Fizz says:

Hey guys, I started this today, I tried to drink 1 cup but i only finished about 3/4 the last 1/4 is sitting in front of me, but I’m too scared to drink it…it makes me gag :( WHYYY?? I don’t have PCOS, but I think I do have hirsutism, as I am noticeably more hairy, than others. I was wondering, do you think supplements or chewing the leave would work….maybe I could get some leaves and try to chew it? I don’t know.

@Faye: I’ve skimmed over you’re comments and you seem to say (correct me if I’m wrong) that a healthier diet/lifestyle helps you’re hair growth lessen. Could you let my know what kinds of foods you eat, and what’s the isbn for the beauty detox book you were talking about in you’re earlier comments? I would really appreciate it, need to sort this problem out…ahh.

I just smelt the honey, and yeaa I never eat honey like ever, I could just tell that wasn’t going to work…Anyone have any ideas? I’m really not a fussy eater, I can usually eat everything…:(

September 12, 2013 at 11:32 am
(347) Nishi says:

@ Faye, I would say the hair on my jaw line are quite course, but the good thing about Nair’s wax that I use is that it was meant for facial hair, so tiny hair. I don’t wait for it to grow out, as soon as I feel it coming back in I wax my face. I can imagine how painfully annoying tweezing can be, but once I wax my hair, I use tweezers whenever I feel there is like one or two hair sprouting back up. Could you elaborate on where your hair grows? Like on your neck too, chin, cheeks, upper lips etc?

I am so glad the lemon thing is working. I keep on saying I am going to make it a routine, but I haven’t yet. I know it works because when I used to use lemon it made my skin softer and helped with acne too. Thanks for your input!

September 12, 2013 at 11:37 am
(348) Nishi says:

@ Fizz, well I noticed with the comments sometimes it never posts my reply, or it takes long, but to be sure I always refresh my browser to check. Your comment did go through. And I know the taste of the tea is a bit off putting, I drank my first cup yesterday and it felt like I was drinking molten toothpaste…ughhh and I think the tea in itself is sweet, so when I added stuff to it, it just made it worse!

Pinch your nose and try downing it lol. I don’t know about eating the leaves, I would think that would taste worse.

(349) Doha says:

Hi everyone
I have stopped drinking the mint tea since I couldn’t find pure spearmint in the market, I have made some changes to my diet, especially ditching all dairy products – this is really really hard – I’m a cheese lover, I love iced coffe with milk :( but had to stop it , my diet basically is high in fiber and plant protein I eat organic eggs and grass-fed chicken meat, I only consume vegetables and fruits from the safe list if I can’t find organic at the store, the safe list fruits- veggies are most likely less in pesticides, I grow mint – not spearmint – basil, spinach and arugula in my back yard to add to my salads, the most important thing that I have add lately was never skipping a meal especially breakfast, from two weeks I also added black tea with spearmint dried leaves – bigleow plantation mint tea, today is the usual day when those stubborn hairs rise up from my chin, I hate so much to run my fingers down there, I was studying – I’m a medical student in my first year- I thought like – I want to feel my chin, but those certain hairs are never there, from a pervious experiment I know that spearmint helps a great deal for delaying and slowing hair growth…. I also suffer from anxiety and very low self-esteem regarding this problem, I haven’t noticed anyone- especially colleagues who are guys-point out at this thing, I only had my driving coach – she was a woman- who told me why I don’t bleach hair on my face :/ anyway, I thread and bleach, I do thread my face every three months, remove chin and upper lip every 7 to 10 days , ….. I will never stop drinking my tea, it would have more taste in the fall with a heavy book studying :P
My love and positive thoughts for every single one of you :)

Hi Everyone!!
Hope you all are doing well. My hair fall has not stopped. Also the acne on my face is increasing. :( But since I wax my hands, the hair growth is slower as compared to before. I would welcome your suggestions :)

@ Pragya and Faye -My hair fall has not stopped. Most of my hair falls from the root. My acne is also there. But then I always had acne. I never eat fried food. I always have a good diet. May be something is wrong with the climate here. It rains and the air is humid. Im really happy things are working out for you both. Im really praying. Hope you all are fine.
@Lilly – Its best to drink 2 cups of tea a day. Too much of anything is bad. And Please DONT CHEW the leaves. I did that for a month and I regret it now. And also try not to add sugar.
@Doha – I know exactly how it feels. Since I cant wax my face- People keep bullying me about it. I hope things work out for you.
@Davi – Thats so nice. Im happy for you. Keep drinking the tea. :)
Thank you guys!! Im praying :)

(353) Doha says:

Hi @priya
Regarding your hair loss problem, I have heard and know people who have had tried apple cider vinegar for hair loss , and had great result, here is a link that will explain how to use it and for how long..

I want to add that stress can potentially cause hair loss issues, I myself suffer from general anxiety disorder, and before 6 months my hair was falling out wildly, I have a very oily hair, now I take a shower and must wash my hair everyday, if I don’t it will look just oily like if I have applied some oil to it, my anxiety is better since I started to work with my doctor on it, my hair loss have completely stopped, my hair is very straight , so when it was falling I looked not nice, I have a round face I must have too much hair on my head, but thankfully it stopped falling out now!

Wish you the best… :)

(354) Nishi says:

@ Doha, wow you must have done thorough research huh. and it’s so cool that you grow your own veggies, quite inspiring. I just wanted to point out that perhaps you can find the tea online if not sold in stores? Good luck with your studies :)

@ Pragya, my friend gave me her bottles of Epilite, 2 of them she got them from a salon too, but yeah I think you are absolutely correct, it probably works more on people with normal hair growth. I used 2 days, but I am so skeptical.

@ Everybody, I have been having one of those down days recently, acne has gotten worse and the hair, it makes me want to give up. It’s just everywhere. It sucks how it is linked with pimples. I have a gianormous volcano growing on my chin. :( The ladies in my family are hairless! Like my grandma, doesnt have a single hair on her legs. she never waxed. Ugggghghghg

@ Priya, thank you for your kind words, hoping the same for all us. So are you going to stop drinking the tea :( ?

@ Nupur, I am 23 too, I think you might have to continue drinking it a bit longer. Perhaps a few more weeks, thats what it seems from some of the comments. Goodluck

I am 20, and have struggled with unwanted hair for several years. I have not tried taking anything, nor have I seen a doctor, but I have a very sever case of hirsutism. I have been using Bigelow Plantation Mint for about two months now. I boil 2 cups of water and steep 12 tea bags for 12 minutes. Then add cold water to make two quarts of iced tea. I drink 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening. I have PCOS and hirsutism as a result of this. The effects have been dramatic. I used to shave twice a day. I now pluck and barely have to shave. It has not gone away completely but the hairs have continually become finer and lighter in color. I started noticing a difference within a week. I also take metformin for insulin resistance and have been taking Pregnitude (a folic acid and inositol supplement). I am sure this combo has helped my hirsutism greatly, but I noticed the most difference after starting the spearmint tea regiment. I wish I would have known this years ago! What a relief to finally find something that is working. It has changed my life! I do also eat low carb and stay away from sugars and things like bread, pasta, etc….

(367) G Knight says:

I just ordered spearmint tea hoping it will help with getting rid of excess facial hair while helping to stop scalp hair loss. I appreciate all the comments as they are very promising. My hair is getting SOOOOO thin. I’m not on hormones after hysterectomy, so I do feel it is most probably hormone related since my thyroid test all turn out ok.
However, I am celiac. My diet is very restricted not just from gluten -as any grain (even rice) makes me itch. I agree with the comment about celiac (gluten) causing extremely painful acne. That was the problem I was having (acne) more than any stomach symptoms which led me to push my doctor for some type of blood test to find out what was causing it. She did the test for gluten and there it was. I keep it well under control by diet. Sometimes I think my diet could be playing a part in the hair loss – even though it is extremely healthy food, I am thin and my body may not be absorbing the minerals from the foods I do eat.
Hope the spearmint tea helps me to some (any) degree. I will be thankful for any help I can get.

(370) Mandy says:

I have been suffering from unwanted facial hair since I was 19 years old. It started with three on my I shaved it and more and more started growing on my sides, lips and I now have a bush on my chin. I have been waxing since I was 26. When I started getting waxed I was told that it would get less and less if I keep doing it. But recently my waxing has went from every two weeks to once a week. It has caused so much torment and embarrassment. I had tried many hair removal techniques that had cost my pocket. Creams, at home wax, pills, the NONO, at home hair removal kits, and I have been seeing an endocrinologist since I was 26. I am now 29 currently getting waxed trying to go back to every two weeks by waiting an extra week with this embarrassing hair. I have to let everything grow in so it can go back to that cycle. I have been trying the Bigelow Plantation Mint Spearmint tea after reading this sight for four days and I can tell a slight difference with my sides they are not fully grown in just yet and my lip hasn’t grown in yet. My chin is still how it always is. But next week I am going to a whole food store and get all natural spearmint tea. I will keep you posted and thank you for giving me hope.

(374) Priya says:

This is just my view. I have been drinking spearmint tea since some months. It slowed down the growth of my hair. But it changed my hormones so much that I am loosing my head hair also :( This is the first time in my life Im facing hairfall. Clumps of hair keep falling. And this is because of the tea. I blamed it on everything except the tea only to be finally told that the tea is causing my hair fall. So I stopped the tea. It has beenn a month. Still my hair keeps falling. I just wrote this to inform you. Might work for some But certainly not for me.
Thank You. God Bless You!! :)

(375) Mandy says:

Priya I am so sorry that had happened to you…. I have thin hair on my head had it my whole life…so that would be something to look at if that ever happens to me.
The tea so far looks like it is doing its job. I waited two weeks to wax but the women at the waxing messed up and left most the hair on my chin so it looks like I have to wait another two weeks to get that cycle. It is very frustrating. I also quit smoking three weeks ago and started the tea 1 week and two days ago. I have been going to the gym which I heard is all great things to do when dealing with hormones. Does anybody know the best face wash to buy so it can be easier for facial hair to be waxed?I read online that it is recommended to wash your face before and after waxing. I have been using Dead Sea facial Wash and Ponds for Sensitive Skin and neither of them are giving me positive results when getting waxed.

Luckily I found palanquin spearmint which I could order online at www. palanquin-tea.com It is available to purchase worldwide from the company. It was sent from the UK so had to wait about a week to get to USA.

(383) Doha says:

Hi Mandy!
If you are going to wax, I suggest you to use wax strips , I don’t wax my face I thread instead , I used veet more than once and it is amazing, the most important thing is trying to buy new wax, sometimes it is not very sticky , some stores sell bad quality or old wax, so if you experience that try to buy from another store, sometimes I buy veet wax strips that are very hard, sometimes no, if they are hard expose them to some heat, eg. Stove heat from a distance .
Let hair grow, wax strips don’t need very long hair it grips even short short hairs on face, before you wax exfoliate with some scrub gently and wash with cold water, dry face place some ice bags on the area you want to wax – to reduce the pain, place the wax stripe and press gently leave for a while then pull against direction of hair growth, the less pain you feel the more hair comes from the root, the more pain the more hair cut from the surface, don’t wash after wax just remove leftovers with baby oil, don’t wash for 24 hours you can use ice bags to reduce the pain during this time! It is ver easy and never messy!
To make ice bags I put ice cubes in a plastics bag!
When hair starts to grow I suggest to bleach, it works very well, when most of the hair grow back again continue following the same steps of exfoliating and waxing!

October 20, 2013 at 9:29 pm
(384) Mandy says:

Thank you so much Doha for the advice. I had just gotten the strips and it worked great. I have been getting it professionally waxed for three years last couple of months I have been needing to get it waxed every week. It gets very costly, and it and it can be very embarrassing with the comments that I have been getting lately. They told me it has been too short that is why they cant get it all and I needed to wait the two weeks and when I waited the two weeks they made sure to mess it up once again and charge me double usually do. And they waxed areas that the spearmint tea has reduced hair on as well. This only cost me a 11 dollars I feel like I finally got control over my own face. Thank you so much!!!

(385) Mandy says:

I have another question my sides and lip seem to be getting lighter and thinner after I have been drinking the tea for a month. But my chin still is thick and dark. Does anyone know how long it takes to notice the chin hair after drinking two cups of spearmint tea a day? I may need to use all natural because as of right know I have been using store bought Bigelow Plantation Mint. I did read in an earlier post that it takes longer for the chin hair to thin but I didn’t see of any stories on facial hair actually thinning on the chin. If anybody has any success stories can you let me know how long it took. Thanks a bunch!!! And I hope everyone keeps the post comming because this site is really helping my self confidence….its nice to know that I am not alone.

@ Sara,

I have a hard time noticing results with 100% spearmint tea, so I would be very skeptical with 35%.

Plus I think this needs a lot of patience like 3 months for the 100% tea. I haven’t been going at it regularly, but if you look at the previous comments you can get an idea. Don’t look at supermarkets, go to a vitamins/nutrition house.

Best of luck.

Hello guys!! PLEASE READ
I no longer drink spearmint tea because the hair on my head falls. But then i wanted to share something with you. I love all of you and want you all to live the best life. I am happy now because I have recently accepted Jesus in my life. He is the best thing that happened to me. If you believe in Him, He will make all things good.
Nobody is perfect. We all have complaints, stress, tensions but then God loves us. That is why He sent his Son to die on the cross for us to save us. We keep doing wrong things. Even I do them. But then we can always ask forgiveness and lead a better life. Have you ever wondered what happens after your death. There is a life – an eternal life for those who accept Jesus as their Saviour. Please do so before its late. He will change your life. Your life may not be so easy after that but then HE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. He really cares. If you can Please read the Bible. I Hope you guys read this. Im sorry if i offended anyone.

Hi Priya,

It is warming to see your concern for others. I respect your beliefs but I agree with Pragya. This page is for spearmint tea and excessive hair issues. But it seems like you are implying that those who do not accept Jesus as their saviour suffer. We all have different beliefs or lack of them too, we just need to be understanding and accepting of them all. Plus, I am sure most of the readers here want to know about the tea more than anything. Thanks for your insight nevertheless.

Hi Pragya,

I hope you are doing well. How is the tea progress? This page seems to have simmered down on the responses in terms of results. I hope it’s going well.

I’ve been taking spearmint capsules (400mg, from Swanson Premium Brand on Amazon) since Wednesday, December 4th. It’s too early to tell if it’s made a difference, but I hope I don’t have hairfall. I have extremely thick hair on my head that has withstood hypothyroidism after my thyroidectomy, so hopefully it will withstand this, too. I just want the hair on my upper lip, chin, upper neck, and lower cheeks to go away. I’ve suffered for twenty years and never heard of spearmint as a remedy until I came across this and other hirsutism forums. I’ll keep you posted as time goes on. Good luck, everyone!

To those who can’t find the spearmint tea in local shops, I purchased mine online, after seeing it mentioned here on the forum: http://www.palanquin-tea.com. (435) sonia says:

@ priya and nupur. I totally agree with you guys. I started drinking spearmint from march 2013, initially for the first few months I drank it for the entire month but then I switched to just the 5 day protocol. In August, I started noticing hair loss which gradually increased so much so that I lost almost half of my head hair. I visited the dermatologist and she told me its telogen effluvirum . I am 39 so even menopause can’t be the culprit. Nothing has changed in my diet except spearmint tea. I would also like to state that I have fine facial hair and sideburns as well as fine bodyhair and hair around y nipples. Nothing has changed…I would really encourage people who have been taking spearrmint tea for more than 6 months to please come forward and share their experience for the benefit of all us sisters in distress.

December 10, 2013 at 3:14 am
(436) priya says:

@Sonia – same here. Even I have telogen effluvium. I dont know what to do. The doc gave me medicines, but now it has been a month after eating medicines and the hair fall has still not stopped. I hate this tea. I wish I never drank it. My hair is in such a bad state. Could you tell me what He prescribed you? I guess you are an Indian. Some other Indians are also facing this hair fall. Wondering what it is! Please reply.
@Aerdrie – Even I had thick hair. They were so thick, believe me. But this tea made my hair fall terribly. It manipulated my hormones in such a way, that no Doctor can help me now. I would suggest everyone to stop drinking the tea. I really wish I had never drank it.

December 11, 2013 at 8:12 am
(437) Doha says:

telogen effluvium can be caused by a sharp shift in the hormones , excessive stress and shocks , + dietary elements , my theory is that spearmit tea could possibly lessen the body’s ability to absorb some essential minerals , for me I drink black tea with spearmit two to three times a day, it’s been 8 months , 3 months I drank spearmint with peppermint , I stopped for a month then Now for 4 months of daily drinking this tea, some occasional days I don’t drink it , and I can’t say that I have noticed any hair loss, but good news telogen effluvium in most cases resolve within a year, …..

December 11, 2013 at 8:41 am
(438) priya says:

@Doha- Thank you. I had 102 days of telogen effluvium. Dont know how long its going to continue. The dermatologist told it would resolve within a couple of months so I dont know.

December 11, 2013 at 1:49 pm
(439) sonia says:

@priya, yes I am an Indian. My doctor asked me whether I am taking any herbs etc but I was too embarrassed to tell her that I was taking spearmint tea for facial hair. Anyway she told me to try rogaine 2% which I haven’t so far. Yes, Doha is right it will resolve but I personally feel that the risk of spearmint tea outweighs its benefit. In my case I didn’t see any hair growth retardation except that for sure there was a delay. I have lost more than half of my hair density but am hopeful now that I have stopped spearmint tea it will resolve in another 6-12 months. Being a basic researcher in Life Sciences I know that it takes almost that long for hormones to set them right.

Hello Sumi!

When you have the items in your basket (me for example, I purchased 3 boxes, which were 15 euros), it says that all shipping costs are included in the total price, so the postage is free. When you enter your details at the bottom of the page, you simply write India in country. I payed through Paypal however they also accept different credit cards. I received the package in about 10 days. However I think it’s a busy period, I live in Romania and usually I receive the packages from the UK in about 5 working days. To India it might take a bit longer but rest assured that you will get them :)

Hope this helps

@priya, Well! definitely more than 100/ day and close to 300-400 when I shampoo. As long as their are no empty follicles in your hair you are fine. The hair will eventually grow back. In the meantime to alleviate the issue take BIOTIN and CHAWANPRASH along with Triphala. Thats the regimen I follow as of now. Take care.

(447) priya says:

@Sonia – Dont worry dear, it will decrease within some months. I strongly advise you to use KZ lotion as a shampoo. It is recommended by all dermatologist. I lose very less hair while shampooing now. Im using it since 2 months so I can vouch on it. I now do not lose that much hair as i used to.

(448) sonia says:

@priya. Thanks for the info Priya but I at the moment I refrain from using any kind of chemicals. Thanks

How do you drink your tea? Any suggestions for someone who doesn’t like tea?

Hi Swetha,

I will try to answer your questions based on my experience:

1) Drink it twice everyday for it to be effective.
2) I don’t know about stopping, but since it is a herbal tea, you could drink it endlessly as you like
3) Spearmint tea should help cause regular periods.
4) I suffer from hair loss associated with stress and hardwater, but this tea did not worsen it. Tea should affect adrogenic hair rather than head hair. BUT a couple of people in the comments mentioned that the tea worsened their hair loss. So I am not sure about this. Use at own risk ;)
5) Tea bags is good. If you can find organic then better.
6) 2 cups a day

All the best!

Hi all, what an interesting and happy conversation, your stories make me want to star drinking spearmint asap!

I have been doing some research online and the spearmint seems to be recommended for women with hirutism or PCOS. I do not have either (I have been examined for PCOS) but I am definitely on the “very hairy” side of the spectrum. So I am wondering if the spearmint works on hair growth not associated with either medical condition.

Any insights? Please?

I’m 15, i have quite a hair on my body especially on my legs and arms, plus a mustache. And being a lass it does nothing but to pull my confidence down.

I’m just wondering if the spearmint tea is bad for people who used to suffer from asthma? Does it affect it somehow?

Does it regulates menstruation? Because mine skips months (1-3 months), and being young it’s quite unusual.

Do you have to shave, wax, or do other removal stuff for the hair to disappear or does it disappear by itself? ( I mean by drinking tea)

I’m very boyish in the past that i never was bothered by this hairiness plus it wasnt as noticeable as it is now because i got tan for playing too much under the sun but i somehow got into indoors stuff and i got whiter and being asian, hair is black which makes it more visible with white skin.

Would be awesome if you guys reply, this thread seems to be almost dead.

(466) Priya says:

Dear All,
Its Priya!!
Please take spearmint tea at your own risk. It can cause HAIR LOSS ON THE HEAD. Many of us, specially Indians faced it. Even I thought that hairloss cant happen to me when people warned me but then it did. And Im suffering from telogen effluvium even now. It is even more painful to see bunches of hair falling from your head. Please I would advise you for your own good not to take it. You will only regret it, Like how i am doing now
Love you all :)

Hair loss? Now that’s a bit taking me back from drinking the tea. But did the hair loss affect you after drinking a single cup? Or does it affect you after a long run on drinking the tea? I’d like to know if the same kind of thing would happen to me, so will I be able to know after trying out 1 cup? Also it seems like not everyone have experience hair loss, so I can still see hope.

And please to those who have seen result, does the hair falls of on it’s own or do you have to wax them off?

(470) Priya says:

If you see there are five or six of us who have experienced hair fall. It has been six months of hairfall now. I had drank the tea for 6 months and suddenly my head hair started falling. It starts falling after some months. Actually this tea causes hormonal changes which causes telogen effluvium. So I advise You not to take the tea. I really dont know what to do with this hairfall. It shows no sign of stopping.
Moral of the story- DONT DRINK SPEARMINT TEA. :(

February 25, 2014 at 7:42 pm
(471) dj says:

Oh so the tea is a no no now 😰
Too bad, but is there any other foods? Like fruits or vegetables or other herb tea that has the same effect or at least contributes in hair removal like spearmint?

One more thing did the hair on your body fell off too or is it only the ones in your head that fell off?

February 26, 2014 at 8:51 am
(472) priya says:

My hair on the head fell and It still falls. Just google telogen effluvium and you can see how people moan about it. It really is more painful. You can know my story if you check the comments above. I have posted many posts. And the hair on the body doesnt fall off. You have to wax it or pluck it. It just slows the growth of the hair.
If you are allowed to pluck or wax- I would recommend you spring epilator. It is quite cheap and effective. I dont pluck or thread though.

February 26, 2014 at 7:36 pm
(473) dj says:

Yea, thanks for thee information but I won’t be drinking the even without that knowledge since I have acid reflux and spearmint tea would make it worse.

So it just slows the growth :/

Plucking did good for me since the hair never grew back (for 8 months now) on my arms somehow, except it takes to long to pluck it and im right handed, i can’t pluck my right arm be so I just plucked a few spots on my left arm cause it’ll be weird if i had hairy arm and a hairless one XD

Anyway I think a healthy lifestyle change would give a huge contribution from losing unwanted hair. Eat healthy guys, get enough sleep and work those butts! dont forget to enjoy :D

I drank spearmint tea/ black tea daily for 6 months then stopped now for 3 months, the tea helped me a lot, without any major hair loss from my scalp , now I want to switch to pure spearmint tea bags, but reading this discouraged me so I don’t now what to do…

February 27, 2014 at 3:49 pm
(476) Kelly says:

Can I add little milk to my spearmint tea? Does adding milk will make it less effective?

February 28, 2014 at 3:07 am
(477) dj says:

I guess it depends on how your body will react to it, your choice, if you haven’t experience a massive hair loss on your head then it probably works for you, and by “helped me a lot” what do you mean by that? youre unwanted hair disappeared? or some disappeared? or it takes longer time for the hair to grow back?

If I remember it right from some books i’ve seen, it makes it less effective. Well at least I know for black tea, it does. So maybe it also does the same thing to spearmints since they’re both teas.

Anyway I haven’t taken a single cup of this tea so.. go listen to the veterans ;) especially to Priya

and, what is this spearmint tea called in other countries like, thailand, japan, philippines, china?

If anyone has an accurate answer, kindly drop an answer :D

Isn’t the fresher the better? at least that’s what i think xD

anyway why would you drink it 2x a day for 6 months when it says only do it for 5 days? ._. maybe after doing it for 5 days you could it for a cup a day?

anyway drink at your own risk, just as priya said.

Because of my chin hair growing I have no type of confidence I don’t let my boyfriend grab my chin or neck to kiss me because I don’t want him to feel it. soo, im 17 now and ive been reading through all these posts and most say to drink 100% spearmint, but its really heard to find in London, and Im not really comfortable with ordering things that im going to eat/drink online because it could be anything. I get hair all over my body all over my face and cheSt and in the normal areas too. It’s really knocking my confidence. I was wondering if there are any Other natural remedies i could do. I dont wax or shave my chest and face because it makes me breakout & get hyper-pigmentation as my skins really sensitive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated & i was also wondering if any places in London sell the spearmint tea.

Thanks for reading (:

I would like to think I break out from elevated testosterone levels as I broke out horribly when I was eating huge cheese pizzas for lunch last year. I’ve cut down on dairy intake and my skin has significantly improved. Drinking this twice a day is a bit hard with such a busy schedule, is drinking a big mug at the end of the night sufficient? Will it at all be effective or does it have to be 2 cups a day to see results?

After reading about the effects of spearmint tea on facial hair I thought that I would give it a try I have been battling facial hair since my early thirties and I am in my fifties now. I am still plucking and tweezing but not as bad as I was. I do have scarring on my chin from all the tweezing I have seen some progress by drinking the tea I was not sure for how long that I was suppose to drink it I only did it for a couple of weeks but if this will get my hormones under control then I will start back drinking it every day. I normally just make up a jug and set it in the fridge too hot to be drinking hot tea.
