Can I Get Genital Electrolysis?

Yes, it’s possible for both women’s and men’s private parts, or genital area, to be treated with electrolysis. Along with the genitals, this includes the backside, perineum (the skin between the anus and scrotum or vulva) and peri anus (skin around the anus). However, not all electrologists are willing to treat these areas. They may be uncomfortable working in such an intimate zone or have other personal reasons.

The only areas that should not be treated with electrolysis are the inside of the nostrils and the ear canal. Hair anywhere else on the body is pretty much considered fair game.

If you’re considering getting treatments performed anywhere in your private area, you would need to ask a potential electrologist not only if they perform treatments in this zone, but also if they have specialized experience.

How it Works at a Glance

An electric current is applied to each hair follicle with the aim of destroying the root with one of the three types: galvanic, thermolysis or blend. It takes multiple sessions to be able to get the electric current to all hair when it’s in the growth phase. 

Points to Consider

• Discomfort. With this being a delicate area, it may be uncomfortable. The amount depends on your personal threshold, the type of electrolysis being used, the technician and if any numbing cream is used.
• Permanency. If you never want to see the hair again then this is the method that has the best record, hands down. You should be 100% sure that you are okay with this area always being bald.
• Sparse hair. Although you may never again grow hair, it doesn’t mean that some hair may not sprout back at some point. The hair may be finer or lighter, so you may still have to shave or wax if you want it completely hairless. Touch up treatments could take care of this.

Choosing Electrolysis or Laser Hair Removal

Professional laser hair removal may also be performed on the genitals. Again, not every spa or clinic will treat the private zone on men and women. But it's possible as another option. 

Home laser hair removal devices are available but are not meant to be used on the genitals. They can be used on the bikini line, which basically means if someone was wearing underwear briefs the hair outside is considered the bikini line.

Permanent hair removal. While laser is FDA approved for permanent hair reduction, electrolysis is FDA approved for permanent hair removal.

Hair and skin color are not a factor. Electrolysis can remove any color hair on any tone of skin. Generally, laser hair removal works on darker hair and can be safely used light to medium skin tones. Other Options

Waxing: This removes hair from the root and can last weeks at a time. Plenty of bikini waxing styles are from just a clean up to leaving a strip or taking everything bare- for men and women.

Sugaring: This method also removes hair from the root and allows for leaving the amount of hair, or lack of, based on your preference. Although a professional sugaring is more expensive than a professional wax, it’s known to be gentler on the skin which is a real asset when removing hair in this delicate zone.
