BodyHonee is a microwavable hair removal kit that had its start many years ago with one woman, but involved the entire family. The creator's daughter, Susan Shemtov, is now owner of the product and shares more about the path to the present and tips for removing hair at home.
Tell us a little about how BodyHonee was created.
Bodyhonee was created in the 1970's by my mother and cosmetologist, Hana Roda. At the time, she was in her 20's and was working at a salon in Israel where they assigned her to make wax out of only 3 ingredients: sugar, salt, and lemon.
After repeated failed attempts at getting the consistency just right, the recipe was perfected and BodyHonee was born. 10 years later, after immigrating to the United States, my parents started making the wax on our kitchen table at home and selling it in flea markets across New York City. Now, we have thousands of devotees to our product.
Did you tweak your Mom's recipe at all for BodyHonee?
Not one bit- the recipe and ingredients have remained the same for over 20 years. Sugar, salt and lemon is still all that is used.
How did working on this product as a family shape your view of it?
Working on this product as a family has everything to do with my view on it - This product was my family's bread and butter while growing up. Both of my parents immigrated to the United States without knowing how to speak, read, or write one word of English. I have seen my parents pour their hearts into this product.
As little girls, my sister and I would help them package the product on the weekends. BodyHonee's success has been a lifelong dream for our family and we are dedicated to using only the purest, all natural ingredients to make our customers happy and hair free.
What do you feel makes your product different than other hair removal kits?
Currently, BodyHonee hair removal wax contains the least amount of ingredients as compared to any other wax product on the market right now. It is also the only product that is targeted to both sexes, not just male or female.
Many people remove their hair at home. What are some of the biggest mistakes you think they make?
The biggest mistakes people make while trying to remove their hair at home is not letting the hair grow out long enough so that they can be pulled out by the wax. Hairs should be a minimum of ¼" - ¾" long for best results.
Another mistake is when people try to wax over skin that is not clean and dry. Lotions, makeup, and natural oils from our skin can inhibit the wax from doing its job.
Also- pulling the wax strip as close to the skin as possible is very important - many people pull straight upward in a 90 degree angle. That will lead to unnecessary pain will not pull out the hairs. Make sure to pull the wax strip in the opposite direction of hair growth!
Others have skincare or beauty recipes that have been passed down from their family members. What advice would you give to those who would like to turn into packaging and selling it?
I would say take it one step at a time. Have a vision for where you would like the product to go- have an end goal in mind. Hire a graphic designer to work on some killer product packaging designs that will be really eye catching.
After your packaging is complete, be persistent with retailers and do not take no for an answer. Reach out to news sources and bloggers for publicity. They will usually be open to testing and writing reviews about your product online.
