The Bottom Line

If you are interested in an almost pain free waxing experience, make the drive to a Uni.K. Wax Center and hopefully one will open in your town soon. If you are in the San Diego, New York City or Florida areas, you are fortunate to have one close by. I think the price is great and I was impressed because it was the first waxing salon I noticed that caters to the needs of a man, as well as a woman.

Full Review: Uni.K. Wax Center San Diego California

This review was more of an experience that I must share with you. I arrived in a strip mall parking lot and saw the storefront for Uni K. Wax. I walked in to the small lobby located in San Diego, California and immediately noticed how spotless it was. The sleek leather chairs were lined up perfectly. The aroma in the air was clean and warm. The receptionist greeted me. I gave her my name and told her that I had an 11 AM appointment.

Let's Get Started

It wasn't until 11:30 AM that I was given any forms to fill out. "Would this be the beginning of my experience?" At 11:35 AM the owner, Elsa, who apologized for the wait, greeted me. She was sincere and horrified at the same time. She explained that there was a mix up at the front desk.

We walked thought the door to the treatment areas and I noticed that the place was immaculate. I would have eaten off the floor! Elsa introduced me to Natalia. She was going to do the damage. I had opted for a Uni.K. package so I was going to brave the Brazilian, underarms and full leg wax.

Each treatment room belongs to one waxer. They are responsible to keep everything clean and stocked. And this room was just that! Natalia was friendly and approachable. I got ready for my waxing by stripping down to the disposable thong I was given. I laid down on the bed and prepared for the worst.

Natalia had gone to get my wax pot. I say my wax pot because nothing is ever used again. The wooden spatula and the wax are thrown away after your treatment. Since the wax is a hard wax, there are no strips laid out. The wax is a Uni.K. blend of pine resin and aloe vera. The smell was very nice. I learned that all the employees of Uni.K. Wax are sent to a two-week training course outside of any state required training. Natalia was knowledgeable and very professional.

Natalia started the waxing on my bikini line. The wax isn't applied in the traditional way, where it goes on somewhat thin and in the direction of hair growth. Instead she put it on very, very thick and in all directions. Sections are made and removed in a simple and quick manner. There was very little discomfort. I was so surprised because we all know, waxing hurts! I would be lying if I told you anything different. This process with this particular wax almost didn't hurt at all. Yes, you read that correctly. My Brazilian was almost pain free. Even when it did give the sting, it wasn't bad at all.

While the wax was setting up on my bikini area, Natalia began applying the wax to my underarms then legs. She went back and forth from applying to removing and 40 minutes later, voila! I was hair free. I must tell you that the wax is warm and at one point during the leg waxing, I was so relaxed I really could have fallen asleep! I was impressed that I had hair free legs, (including toes), bikini and underarms in under an hour.

The only down falls I saw were that the only location on the West Coast is about an hour and a half away from me, the receptionist was not on the ball like she should have been and unfortunately, I was covered in little red bumps and regrowth of hair within a week. I also had ingrown hair in each area I had waxed. I was disappointed with that because what is the lesser of two evils, ingrown hair or the pain of traditional waxing? For me, the pain is tolerable but the ingrown hair is not!

Now, the ingrown hair may not happen to every one. Each of us is different; our skin type, our exfoliation techniques and our hair texture and growth. So this might not affect you. There is also the possibility that the hair was being broken off just under the skin as opposed to being removed from the follicle. I don't know that is what happened here, but I went from extremely loving the service to being disappointed a few days later.
