No, I’m not talking about the label on the kind of bathing suits you wear, but designing the hair underneath your bikini into different shapes and colors. Even though you may not see this right before you eyes like other popular trends, women are getting this done.

A growing company named Betty Beauty sells products specifically for creating a designer bikini. One of their products, ‘color for the hair down there’ as stated on the box, can transform hair to many hues like black, brown, blonde or auburn, and fun shades- like pink or blue.

Betty™ charmcils™ are stencils the company also makes, used with waxing and other hair removal methods to create bikini shapes like hearts, stars and lightning bolts. Get 8 different stencils for $9.95 on sale at Betty Beauty. Bridal betty (pictured above) is a bikini designing kit especially for brides that comes with Malibu (aqua blue) hair color and free charmcils™. Dark Skin? Light Hair? Finally, Laser-Like Hair Removal

Standard lasers have left people with dark skin or light hair frustrated because they work by targeting pigment (color), and can leave those with dark skin burned or scabbed, and the light-haired with less than optimal results. Having light skin and dark hair has been the winning combination to get the best results from laser hair removal.

Now we have a hair removal system called ELOS (Electro-Optical-Synergy) by Syneron and it doesn’t work like the typical laser. It combines radio frequency and Diode laser, so it can be used on dark skin and those with red, blonde or gray hair. I haven’t found any independent reviews of people that have used ELOS, so I can’t give you any percentage of results. By calling 1-866-787-4980 you can find a treatment center near you and get a personal consultation for the ELOS system.

Ancient Hair Removal

Wanting to get rid of hair isn’t a new trend, by any means. Today we are fortunate to have all the modern day conveniences of high quality products, tools, equipment and trained professionals to clear away our hair, in a fast and sometimes even pain-free way. Ancient practices like sugaring and threading have stood the test of time, and are still used in our modern world. But here's some other interesting items and ingredients people have used for hair removal throughout history:
  • Sharpened rocks and shells
  • A "tweezer" made from two shells being pressed together
  • Depilatories (hair removing creams) made of dried cat’s dung and vinegar
Removing hair was often for general appearance, but also for special occasions like the bride on her wedding day, or to keep up with the current fashion (like high foreheads).

Bikini and Brow Waxes at Age 8?

I recently read a piece in Philadelphia magazine: Trend: Pretty Babies that talks about how girls as young as eight are getting eyebrow and bikini waxes. Yikes! Now, I haven’t personally seen any prepubescent girls trying to get waxed at the spa where I work, but it doesn’t surprise me that this could be a growing, disturbing trend because of the pressures that make people think we have to become adults before our time. From talking with other salon and spas, release forms for parents to sign so their young children can get services, including hair removal are becoming all too common.

Other than the fact that it's a waste of money because they’re probably just ridding peach fuzz at such a young age, I think ripping hair off children is ridiculous and can’t help to wonder: What’s next? Tell me what you think, and post a comment below.

Botanical, Soy-Based Hair Remover

If you’ve tried waxing and it’s just too hard on your skin, but you can’t find someone who does the more gentle-to-your-skin sugaring in your area, you may just have another alternative. NuFree, a botanical, soy based hair remover free of any wax, sugar, or honey, was developed for plastic surgeons that needed to remove patient’s hair before surgery.

Sorry, you can't buy a kit and do it yourself, this botanical hair removal system is only available at a NuFree salon or spa. I was able to try it when working at a NuFree spa, here's what I like:
  • You don’t have to prep skin to take out the moisture (like waxing)
  • It goes on thin, so it's is very gentle on skin
  • The product doesn't dry out or stick to the skin like wax
  • You can reapply it over any hairs that didn’t come off (unlike waxing)
  • A product called Finipil is applied right after service which helps keep hair-free area clean, and slow down hair growth
Don't get me wrong, it's not that I'm not against waxing, it's just not compatible with everyone. So it's good to know there are other options.

Laser At Home. FDA Clears Two New Devices

Silkn laserIt was only a matter of time before laser hair removal could be done at home, with its great demand and high professional costs. It seems two companies had similar ideas because both are launching their home laser systems, Tria and Silk’n™, very close to one another.

The same principle is used in the home versions, damaging hair follicles with a pulsed light like in laser treatments you would receive at a Medical Spa or Clinic. And also similar to the majority of professional lasers, they can cause scarring or burning if used on dark skin, and less than optimal results if you have red, blonde, white, or red hair, because the laser targets dark pigment (color). So the best laser candidates still remain to be those with light skin and dark hair, even at home. One interesting difference is that when using professional lasers you need to wear goggles, but they're unnecessary with these home versions. I’m very curious to see if lasering at home gives comparable results.

Tria: Cleared by the FDA for use on the neck down. Once you press the laser against your skin, it will turn red and lock up if your skin is too dark, or beep if it’s light enough to safely use. You can purchase it for $995 beginning in May 2008 from aesthetic physicians, or in the Fall on their website, and at some spas and retailers. If you would like to reserve one, you can do so at www.triabeauty.com.

Silk’n™: (pictured above left) Cleared by the FDA for areas below the neck. It has 5 adjustable setting levels, and will only give out the pulse of light when it’s touching the skin. You won’t find Silk’n™ at the store, only through a physician for $800. Their website doesn't say exactly when it will be available, but you can sign up at www.Silkn.com to be notified when you can buy one in your area.

Although the prices seem high, just one professional laser treatment can cost anywhere from $200 - $900, and you usually need 4 -6 treatments.

Wax or Tweeze Eyebrows? That Is the Question

Girl tweezing eyebrowsPersonally, I only use tweezers to clean up a few hairs after a waxing. I haven’t done a complete brow shaping with tweezers since I was a teenager. Brow waxing is my choice, hands down over tweezing because it’s quick, and takes away the finest hairs.

There are people I personally know who have never tried waxing their brows, scared of the results they will end up with. The shape and thickness of eyebrows is very important because they can make someone look out-dated or give the face a needed lift. So what’s better for your eyebrows? Waxing or Tweezing.
