Laser pubic hair removal  is a great option for those who are sick of shaving. Razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and irritated skin are undoubtably some of the worst parts about shaving, but laser hair removal can help you banish razors or wax strips forever.

How It Works

Laser hair removal uses pulsed light to seek out hair pigment and disable hair follicles. Multiple treatments are needed because hair needs to be "zapped" when it's in the growth phase. Generally, laser hair removal works best on dark hair and lighter skin tones because the light seeks out darker pigments, which means it can damage dark skin pigments, too. However, advancements in laser technology are being made, and more people who have lighter hair or darker skin tones are being able to safely and effectively receive treatments as technology improves.

At Home or In-Office?

As of now, none of the home Laser or IPL (intense pulsed light) devices are supposed to be used on your genitals. But, they can be used around the bikini line and inner thighs. This means hair outside of a regular underwear line is fair game. So, if you want some or all of the hair on near your genitals removed, then you'll need to see a professional.

It's best to research spas or clinics in your area and then make some consultations. Find out more about the machines they use, who will be performing your treatments and their credentials, the recommended amount of sessions, and session prices. Make sure they have specialized experience in pubic hair removal.

You should also be able to choose a style. For instance, leave a pubic hair strip, a square, rectangle or take the bikini line in as deep as you'd like—including totally bare in the front and back.

More to Consider

  • Skin color. While your regular skin tone may fall in the safe range, sometimes skin around the bikini area is a little darker. It may not be safe for these areas to have hair removed depending on your skin tone, but this should be discussed at your consultation.
  • Discomfort. Laser often feels like a rubber band snapping on the skin. Of course, everyone's pain tolerance is different, but the bikini zone is a sensitive area. Also, it tends to hurt more in areas with very dark and thick hair. Of course, a numbing cream can be used to help with sensitivity, and treatments often get less painful after the first couple times as there is less and less hair with each session.
  • Permanency. It's FDA approved for permanent hair reduction and not permanent hair removal. Use of these specific words aside, you should be okay with the idea of never seeing hair again. If you have it all removed, are you certain you'll never want any pubic hair?
  • Sparse hair. Some hair may grow back down the road- even though it may be finer or lighter. You may need to shave or wax if you want it completely hairless. Touch up treatments could take care of this.

Laser Hair Removal Vs. Electrolysis for Pubic Hair Removal

Electrolysis can also be performed on the genitals to reduce hair growth. However, not every electrologist is willing to treat the entire bikini area.

  • Permanency. Again, laser hair removal is FDA approved for permanent hair reduction, but electrolysis is FDA approved for permanent hair removal. While nothing is one-hundred percent guaranteed, you'll have better odds never seeing hair again with electrolysis.
  • Hair and skin color. Electrolysis can treat any color hair on any skin tone. Generally, laser hair removal works on darker hair and can be safely used on light to medium skin tones. There is more advancement being made outside these limitations especially with devices that implement more than one technology. One at-home device, the Me Smooth, combines intense pulsed light and radio frequency and is made to be used on any skin tone and treat all hair colors.

Other Options

If you're not ready or able to commit to something along the permanent lines, there are plenty of other ways to remove hair in your bikini area. No matter what, do what makes you feel best and works best for your lifestyle.
